After he was born, most folks thought he was a goner after he was diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis and estimated that he only had a short time to live -- he credited the Shriners for saving his life.

Spinal TB, internment camps...it's a wonder how he was able to develop so much talent despite life's hardships.
