Welcome to the thread-please take some time to read it.
Yes, there are more.
Perhaps with a little difference in name but still very similar.
As it has been said several times in the thread, Jon Krkauer's book "Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith" is a rather good book to read if one has interest.

Texas Polygamy Raid May Pose Risk

Texas Polygamy Raid May Pose Risk
ELDORADO, Tex. — The raid last week on a polygamist compound here is complicating law enforcement efforts in Utah and Arizona, where there are far more offshoot Mormon polygamists but where the authorities try to avoid such large-scale confrontations.
Officials in those states have dealt for many years with the tangled and delicate problem of opening communications with polygamist groups while also winning the confidence of girls who are taken as under-age wives. The Texas authorities say the raid here was prompted by a 16-year-old who called on a cellphone from the compound in a cry for help.
But the raid’s scale — 416 children were removed, making it the largest raid in more than a half century in the West — and the fact that the 16-year-old has not been identified, has sharply eroded trust in the government among polygamist groups, according to law enforcement officials in several states.

Wait.

I've been on the road and this is the first time I've posted.

Seriously, I've just watched a couple of days worth of coverage and my question is where are the men?

I've only seen wives interviewed, and some of the speech patterns and body language are nearly scary. Very robotic. Rehearsed? Staged?

The men have definitely taken the back seat and it seems to be both due to the gender norms in their sect and also about what appeals to the "court of public opinion."

They showed a few men at the court hearing the other day and interviewed a couple of them. However, it seems like the women (surprise, surprise) are taking a lot of the blame for this and are the ones who are very visible because they are appealing on behalf of motherhood/what's supposedly best for the kids.

I forgot one word: brainwashed.

There's something not natural.

As for the timing and the way this was carried out, I strongly suspect that somewhere in the future, we will find out that there is a lot more beneath the surface of this story than we know right now.

What that might be, I wouldn't care to speculate -- and under the circumstances, neither should the media or the rest of us.

I'll speculate though... in that I'm pretty sure that there'll be a Canadian connection to this whole thing.

There was a split in the FLDS of sorts up in Canada with the enclave in Bountiful being split between Jeffs and Bishop Winston Blackmore... a split that saw the airing of some "dirty laundry" in the political and theological snipping between the two. It was even suggested in the media two years ago that Winston was helping the RCMP and FBI by feeding them info about Jeffs activities.

Regardless, the RCMP, BC Attorney General, and CSIS have all had a long and healthy interest in the group, investigating allegations of abuse dating back to the 80s... allegations supported by some of those who "defected" from the cult. Of course the problem then, as now, is that these allegations of abuse can't be pursued legally without a victim or witness willing to testify... and if the authorities happened to have a victim or witness come forward they'd certainly act on that a swoop in, all while (I assume) issuing vague or misleading public statements to protect the identity of their source(s) from retaliation by the fanatics within the cult.

^^^^ I read that this morning. This had my skin crawling.

"However, Goddard started talking with Shurtleff about the FLDS in 2002 shortly after he was elected, his spokesman said.

Arizona officials put up a billboard in Colorado City with a toll-free number for young women who felt abused. They got rid of local police officers, who had pledged loyalty to Jeffs, and opened an office in the community manned by Mohave County officers."

From what I understand, there is a state representative from Eldorado that backs up everything they do, trying to get the age for women to marry in Texas from 16 to 14.

Seeing as they can only actually marry the first wife legally anyway, are they really talking about lowering the age of consent for sex with minors?

The description of previous local cooperation is mind blowing. Police officers who pledged their loyally to Jeffs?

Do you see why lowering the marriage age doesn't make sense as a legal issue then as a means of furthering their polygamous ends? I guess it means that they can have a younger first and legal wife, but since none of the other marriages are legal anyway, what would it matter?

Not that the whole thing makes much real sense to me.

Is it normal to have a lower legal age for marriage than it does for sexual consent? I've never paid that much attention to this issue before. It seems weird though.
