I had an ex-boyfriend who used to go the speed-limit on the highway in the left lane, and when I told him to get over because there was a car on his ass he'd tell me that they could just pass him on the right (and no amount of arguing could convince him that this was illegal in more then one way)...that was one quirk I could NEVER deal with my entire life, but maybe Taualumna could. Point is...she doesn't have to settle just because "boys will be boys", she has the right to look for her gentleman.
I think that there is a big difference between speeding and sticking his face in front of the air conditioner. Speeding can be dangerous. I have no idea what the big deal is with the air conditioning. How does that go against anyone's values? Maybe I just can't picture it.

Taualumna has a right to do whatever she wants with her love life. I never suggested she settle. I was just giving her some advice that might help her be happy.

Since, apparently, by "old fashioned" you mean serious and humorless. Yeah, there's not very many of those guys around. Most other guys avoid them like the plague since they always take all the fun out of what's going on.

As someone stated earlier they do usually tend to be mama's boys. But, if that's what you want then, hey, more power to ya.

Mine would do that too. Better yet, he's the one BUYING.......

Now if I could only figure out the perfect thing to say to get this whole Halliburton shit out of his mind......

Personally, I thought the air conditioner thing was funny. I would have laughed. Hell, I might have done it myself.
The man who can make me laugh is the one who will get my attention.

I would be so happy if I was on a date with a guy and he let me put my face in front of the air conditioner first. What a gentleman!

It's a good thing to know that you have your air conditioning values all worked out. This makes many of us here at GC proud.

Fight for your right to put your face in front of the air conditioner "just cuz." I do it and I make sounds like an airplane! What?!

Dressing up or down has very little to do with maturity, and absolutely nothing to do with your qualifications as a boyfriend. Using "tradition" to justify idiotic social norms can, to cop a phrase, eat some ass. Inferring that you can't find a guy to take off your coat b/c we all lack "traditional values" is the biggest cop-out I've ever heard.

Also - my name is Rob, I'm qualified for MENSA and I want to be a pediatrician. I start Med School next year. I'm 23, but I will act like I'm 23 often. I feel that this is important. Why?

Because I've never heard anyone before you use the term "old-fashioned" in a positive way (with respect to people; skondra's makes some mighty fine old-fashioned ice cream, yo). Girls will continue to refer to me as "fun" rather than "old" until the day i die. I win.

OK so I almost replied to this post, but what I was going to reply with is not appropriate for GC. In a good way. So I will just continue to echo those requests to commence baby-making ASAP.

Okay, being serious for a moment (in no way does that mean I do not like fun ), but there are less "old fashioned" guys because there are less "old fashioned" women.
With the sexual revolution, women changed their dieas about their roles in society and men had to change right along with them. That doesn't mean there aren't any out there though.
So men my be wary of doing these things for/in front of women because they don't know how they'll respond. Some women may not like it or expect a man to open the car door for them, pull out their chair to seat the at dinenr, etc, etc.
I personally, don't hold those tradional views and never expect a man to open the car door for me, well for one I can do it myself, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate it when it's done for me.
So maybe, if you want to find a man with more traditional values and views you have to start looking for them in places where people who hold those views congregrate. I'd venture to say that bars, work, and even schools don't hold many of those types of men.

Maybe it's just because my school is full of prep school boys, but I'm generally pretty shocked if a guy doesn't hold a door open for me - it's just common manners to hold a door for someone! I do it everywhere - church, Target, the grocery store, whatever.

I agree that it's just polite to hold a door open for anyone and I do it too, but I'm speaking more abot things like car doors, you know where the man get out's first and opens that car door for you. You don't see too much of that nowadays and I never expect something like that.

honestly, if there were guys that believe that chivalry is not dead, you wouldnt enjoy this guy. someone who always opens door, pays for you, thinks women are "fragile creatures", and ready for taking (for bed). If a guy was to read you poetry and sing songs to you everyday, it would drive you crazy. I am sorry to say this but women nowdays are more aggressive, we know what we want and we can take care of ourselves. No BS, just have hot passionate sex then wake up in the morning LEAVE the guy in bed and go to work/school. POWER TO THE WOMEN. Besides how many women choose a hot sexy jerk over a nice sweet guy that will always be "your brother"

And the comment WAY back there about military academy guys... Yeah, they seem to be a little bit more gentlemanly... I wish I still had my West Point guy.
