Remember when you were little and you and your friends would take a piece of paper and write different things on it-like cars, jobs, and cities-and then you'd fold it up and put the first 2 fingers of each hand in and someone would pick a number and thats how many times you would move the paper around-and then you'd pull up the first flap to find the answer to the first question???

Ya, thats what we do.

We played Craps. Instead of numbers on the table, we taped the name of PNMs to the square. The Rush Chairman shot the dice as the chapter cheered on their square. The Chapter President was the "stickman"

In Gamma Phi Beta, we have "PNM Tokens" which are basically poker chips with the girls' numbers on them. Then, we have a wooden box with a slot at the top. At the end of each night, we flip the tokens at the box - the ones that fall into the slot are eliminated. That's what we mean when we say that "sometimes girls fall through the cracks".

Well, I don't mind sharing. After each day of rush, we sit around in our living room, and go through a powerpoint with each PNM's name and picture (usually just their facebook picture or one they supply - it's just a reminder of who they are, since we meet so many people. We don't facebook stalk you and then talk about how your picture is terrible or anything like that, don't worry!). People who know the girl or met her during rush give the girl in question a ranking from 1 (terrible) to 5 (amazing), and then explain why they gave that score. We always try to end with a positive, and then everyone in the sisterhood, even those that haven't met the girl, give her a score 1-5 based on what they've heard. Our New Member Selection chair then adds up the points each PNM got, and the more points, the higher on our list she goes. Also, if you have a specific reason why you would feel uncomfortable with a certain girl in the house, you can talk to our president privately, and she will be cut, but that happens fairly infrequently.
You are, however, in a local sorority. It is the tendency of national GLOs to not talk about membership selection. So you aren't doing anything wrong on your end, I'm just giving the perspective of the NPCs.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the NPCs tend to have far more complicated selection processes than the one you just described. I know our Recruitment Manual is something like 150-200 pages long. This is likely to do with the prevalence of NPC chapters at schools with HUGE recruitments...let's face it, if it was as simple as sitting in the living room and a 1-5 ranking there is no way that our chapters could get through 900-1,000+ women in the large recruitments.

My turn again! (with a nod to Navane for inspiring me)

There is another method that involves putting the PNM's names on two lists. First, their names go on an A List. The members throw darts at the list and the girls whose names get hit with a dart are moved to the B List. The B List then becomes the Bid List. This is where we get the expression, "Don't worry. You will end up where you were meant to be."

Yeah, I understand that every place does it differently, and there are rules you have to obey. My school probably is unusual among Greek schools that it is so small (300 girls that rush? That's more than half of the girls in the class). But since it is something I am allowed to talk about, I thought I'd at least share so that the OP could have some idea of how it MIGHT be done.

I guess I wasn't as much surprised that people chose not to share their own stories as much as I was surprised that everyone thought it was so unreasonable to even ask. Even if she only got a few responses, that's still a bit more information than she had before.

It's not that people choose not to respond to such questions, it's that to the best of my knowledge all NPC orgs are not allowed to discuss this with non-members. The membership selection process is confidential and bound by ritual. After all, we aren't called "secret" societies for no reason.

While I'm willing to bet there are similarities between groups' processes, each org developed its own methods. While it may not be patented, it is proprietory and private information. It is one of the things that makes a group unique and (hopefully) successful.

Co-sign with Zillini.

The humorous, tongue-in-cheek responses are our way of laughing at ourselves and poking a little fun at the whole process.

Let's keep the local bashing and NPC superiority out of it, please.

I don't think Entchen's openness has anything to do w/ her being in a local - it has to do with her campus culture. The NPC groups on her campus are apparently also rather free with their MS information.

Uhhhh? I was clarifying that she was free to talk about membership selection because she was in a local. We aren't. Don't put words/intentions in my mouth because my post in no way inferred that.

Assuming she is free to talk about it because she's in a local IS local bashing. You have no idea what her local's rules are, or the rules of any of the other hundreds of locals across the country. Some of them are WAY more secretive than any NIC or NPC group.
