I was not asked to verify anything. Eventhough they can not verify with only a picture as they asked tld for, but still.
I suggest everyone use this with caution, I am no perp, but I signed up and was approved with out a second guess.

I didn't have any trouble joining it, but honestly after surfing the site a view times it seemed almost the same as facebook, and slightly boring.

I agree.
I think someone came on here not too long ago spamming the site with SororityLive links. I took a look at it and realized that it was just one of those FaceBook-like/MySpace-like sites that people will register for and then forget about.
Those FaceBook/MySpace-like "but for Greeks!" sites are a dime a dozen and no one really pays attention to the copycats.

Yeah, I kind of agree, I'm still checking things out, but without other people from my sorority on there... it is very boring. The chapter operations seem interesting, but again, without participation from my girls, it's pretty useless
well, it was worth a shot i guess

I must be really irking this boy's nerves!
Ok here's the response I got:
Quote:
Hi tld221,
Thanks for responding. I requested more information because the NYU Greek Life site did not list Sigma Gamma Rho as a campus sorority. Since your chapter covers the New York Metropolitan area, you will have to sign up again and select "New York Metropolitan" as the campus. However, since the Alpha Pi website has not been updated since 2001, your name is not on the site's member list.
FraternityLive and SororityLive are currently working with headquarters to develop a plan for accurate member verification. Until we have member lists from HQs, we must verify members using alternate means, and the best way for you to get verified right now is to send us a picture of yourself with letters on. This is generally good proof since nobody would go to the trouble of buying someone else's letters simply to gain access to a website.
Please re-register under the 'New York Metropolitan' campus, and as soon as we receive a picture from you (or post one on your profile when your sign up) we can verify your membership.
Thanks, Justin

So the bolded really prompted me to respond with this:
Quote:
Justin,
I can register under my graduate chapter if it is a problem. i was using my undergraduate chapter because the site prompted me to give a school. I think you may have the wrong URL - the Alpha Pi website has definitely been updated since then - late 2006. but that will not be of much help to you as we haven't listed chapter members in a while and some chapters just don't do that.
A suggestion to verify members - maybe you have site members verify their own sisters/brothers? Using some GLO-specifc passcode or quiz, something relevant to those members but elusive enough that you and the SL/FL people wouldn't know the meaning behind it? I dunno, i'm just one person, but i really disagree with using a picture of me in letters as verification, especially when (as you've mentioned) your idea of verification equals looking up various greek websites... which anyone can do in both scenarios.
Good luck with getting membership lists from various HQs - you do realize that a. those lists are confidential and the average HQ isnt gonna give it to you? and b. those lists can run into millions of members, which means you are really cutting your work out for yourselves.
Lastly, i understand that you feel that an Internet perp wouldn't buy letters, take a picture and all that just to join a website, but you would be surprised at other similar lengths greek perps would take to prove that they are members of GLOs they are not.
All the best,
tld221

i'm gonna go with my GCers and chalk SororityLive up to being one of those random Greek sites (wasn't there one called Greek Yearbook?) that tries to get everyone Greek linked up but for no real reason. Especially when the creators/ppl who run the site question my legitimacy and have no good way to verify me.

Also, someone may not buy letters and send a picture, they may copy and pas te a pic from the net to use for the crappy verification process, they won't be able to prove it is not you. I suggest using this with lots of caution.

I decided to check it out and registered when this thread was started. It said that I had to verify something in my email before I could use it. Still waiting for that verification email...

I had to ask them to re-send the email...there's a link to do that on their page.

I did that and registered and am just very not impressed. I already asked them about getting rid of my account.

YOu guys this is what I wrote to my Sorority on the site:
Quote:
Hi Sorors!
I hope everyone is well and having a great summer! I wanted to warn everyone to be cautious as to what is said on this site, because I was not asked to verify my membership. If I didn't have to verify then there is not telling who can sign up and say they are a soror. I just want to protect what is OURS, because it is a SERIOUS matter!
However, I just wanted to say hello and I love you all!
Sisterly,

Today I got this from site admin:
Quote:
Hi 1908Revelations,
We were notified of your post by concerned site members. I think you are misunderstanding our verification process.
FraternityLive and SororityLive are currently working with headquarters' to develop a plan for accurate member verification. Until we have member lists from HQs, we must verify members using alternate means, which involves a team of staff scouring campus Greek Life pages, national headquarters sites, chapter websites, facebook, myspace, etc. We also request further proof that you are a member before we verify when we are unsure.
When a member joins an existing chapter, it is up to that chapter's officers to verify the members, which is a guaranteed filter for non-members.
We understand that our verification process is not perfect but it is quite secure and will only be getting better. Therefore we would appreciate if you would remove your comment from the Alpha Kappa Alpha board as soon as you get a chance.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Cheers,
Justin Stein

So....I replied
Quote:
Hi Justin,
It is not as if I am saying that perps will be allowed access to anything sacred to Alpha Kappa Alpha, and should they happen upon something that will not make them a member of my sorority. I would like to know how my membership was verified? I am not on facebook, myspace, nor does my chapter have a website. I am almost certain that my corporate HQ did not converse with you about my membership.
Please do not think that I am trying to bash your site, but I vowed to protect Alpha Kappa Alpha and I am sure you understand about proctecting your organization.
Thank you,
1908Revelations

Verifying by pictures means nothing to me. I can get a picture from anywhere!

Between GC, Facebook, Myspace, SisterCircle, and AlphaNet, I just don't think there's a need for anything like that. I mean, sure if they had a secure verification process like SisterCircle, it might have merit. But, right now, it's just another thing to split attention on to.

Does this guy seriously think he'll be able to get member lists from the HQs? If so, he is completely deluded. It's hard enough to get that stuff if you're a MEMBER, sometimes.

I still don't have access to AlphaNet, but facebook and Sister Circle are all I really need.
