OK . . . here's my deal:

I'm going to be forever that person that does goofy shit in formal situations, b/c it's funny. It's a fantastic icebreaker, and it's a startlingly effective business strategy because, unlike your inferences, most people in the business world DON'T WANT TO BE DOUCHE BAGS. Dressing up or down has very little to do with maturity, and absolutely nothing to do with your qualifications as a boyfriend. Using "tradition" to justify idiotic social norms can, to cop a phrase, eat some ass. Inferring that you can't find a guy to take off your coat b/c we all lack "traditional values" is the biggest cop-out I've ever heard.

Also - my name is Rob, I'm qualified for MENSA and I want to be a pediatrician. I start Med School next year. I'm 23, but I will act like I'm 23 often. I feel that this is important. Why?

Because I've never heard anyone before you use the term "old-fashioned" in a positive way (with respect to people; skondra's makes some mighty fine old-fashioned ice cream, yo). Girls will continue to refer to me as "fun" rather than "old" until the day i die. I win.

There's always Harry. He seems to find ways to cope.

This thread makes me want to stick my head in front of an air conditioner and jump in one of those inflatable bouncing castle things. I think that you need to lighten up. If you want a boyfriend or a relationship, I suggest you look for a man who shares your values, goals, and interests. Don't be so quick to dismiss guys for quirky behavior. You might miss out on someone great. Good luck!

Ditto. My air conditioning is broken and I'm spending all my money going to our Convention in SIX days rather than getting it fixed!

Maybe next month I'll have A/C again!

I think that this is exactly what Taualumna is doing. If her values include finding a guy that doesn't stick his face in front of the air-condtioning, then she has a right to look for that kind of guy. Yes, all guys are going to have their quirks, (and so are girls for that matter) but she needs to find one with the values she desires and quirks that don't bother her. I had an ex-boyfriend who used to go the speed-limit on the highway in the left lane, and when I told him to get over because there was a car on his ass he'd tell me that they could just pass him on the right (and no amount of arguing could convince him that this was illegal in more then one way)...that was one quirk I could NEVER deal with my entire life, but maybe Taualumna could. Point is...she doesn't have to settle just because "boys will be boys", she has the right to look for her gentleman.

I have no problem finding guys that act chivalrous - but I don't want a guy who just opens the door for me and stands up when I leave. I also want a guy who's at the bar taking shots with me, dancing on a table with me, and then holding the door open for me when we leave. He needs to have fun to go with those manners.

Once again, my mind is in the gutter and this sounds like a scene from Behind The Green Door XXVII.

The guys I work with can be as gentlemanly and sophisticated as any royalty - but I've partied with them too, and they can be complete goofballs. It all depends who you're with. If we were still in a "work" situation - i.e. a party for our clients - they need to have some decorum. But if it's just me and them, they can dance on a bar for all I care. I don't know what your situation at this party was, but if there was still some business getting done, then yes, that was inappropriate.

Plus I just want to add that some guys can be charming and chivalrous in public but abusive pricks in private. I don't mean just thinking you should wear pearls & a dress to wax the floor, I mean seriously physically or mentally abusive. Jess is right in saying you have every right to look for someone and be picky - but don't let fancy manners or clothes deceive you.
