I didn't find your topic offensive at all.
And I agree that homosexuality is definitely a valid topic/issue. The reality is that gays/lesbians/bisexuals are
everywhere 
and deserve respect just like everyone else and people need to begin to deal with that in a mature, honest and intelligent fashion.
Also, I am sorry to hear about your friend.
