Adding to the multi-rush stories--I'd heard about this sort of thing happening, but I only saw one first-hand--and it was a doozy. A girl in my high school class, daughter of high-profile society donors (who were and are absolutely people), was one of the nastiest pieces of work I've ever encountered. Mean, self-important, and just hateful. Her only friends were hangers-on who enjoyed her parents' generosity. We both moved into the same private dorm at UT, and started recruitment together. This was back before open houses, and you started out with up to eight invitations (out of fourteen houses). She started out with a full set of invitations--and was immediately cut from every.single.one--including her mother's house.
Within twenty-four hours, she was out of the dorm and on her way to Mary Baldwin, where there are no NPC sororities. I didn't see her again until our ten-year reunion, where she refused to speak to anyone and left early. I hope all that money makes up for having no friends.
