As you describe the process, I can see why you felt pressured to join too quickly. Am I to understand that you were offered 2 bids after a general informational session? That would freak me out too. If you could jump into my wayback machine I'd recommend you ask them if you could attend a few events before committing, but also not declining either offer. Alas, I live too far away to let you in my wayback machine.
I also say the dress was too cutesy, but not seeing you in the dress on your campus, it's hard to say. You want to look nice, but comfortable and seasonally appropriate. Don't over think it. And this is yet another reason why I'm glad I don't live where there's cold weather. I can put on the same cocktail dress in January or July and be fine.
