My mom always sewed all of my costumes as a kid. I remember being a pumpkin, a skeleton and a witch. The best one was in 1976, when everybody was making a big deal out of the bicentennial, my mom made me a beautiful colonial girl dress and hat. I loved that one.

As an adult, my best one was a tin man costume. I was working in a child psych hospital so all the staff dressed up (and we made costumes for all 60 kids too!). The Occupational Therapy and Recreational Therapy staff (there were 7 of us) were all characters from the Wizard of Oz. My tin man was home made from cardboard. I couldn't sit while wearing it, but it looked really good.

Now I just have a Renaissance costume that I wear whenever I need a costume. Although, one year, for the Cub Scout pack meeting/Halloween party, I was having a bad week and didn't feel like putting on that dress so I dressed all in black, put dark circles under my eyes and this crazy black hair wig that was all ratty and messed up. When grownups asked me what I was, I said I was a Menopausal Mom....lol.

The most memorable (and not for a good reason) was the one my aunt forced on my in elementary school. I was staying with her at the time and she refused to let me wear the cat costume my mom had painstakingly made for me. Instead, she made me a costume she approved of and I had to go to school dressed as the Virgin Mary.

As if things couldn't get worse, I was in public school at the time and some parents & teachers found my costume offensive so I had to sit in the office crying my heart out while all the other kids joined in the parade.

I was too young to understand the ramnifications of wearing a religious costume at a public school.

My mom's not creative so most of our costumes were store-bought. In kindergarten, I was Bridal Barbie. It came with one of those plastic masks and it was really cold that night, so I was shivering while my face was all sweaty in the mask. In first grade, I was a witch. In third grade, my aunt sewed me a purple princess dress and my crown was a white lace-and-pearl wedding crown. In fifth grade, I was an angel. In seventh grade, I went as a monster. I had one of those latex masks and wore all black. In eighth grade, I wore a faceless mask (black hood with black mesh over the face) and black clothes and carried a butcher knife.

In college, I was a Playboy bunny, a flasher (wore flashing Halloween safety lights under my jacket), and Barbie's slutty friend (my roommate and I were supposed to go as Barbies...she went all out as Princess Barbie and I procrastinated so I had to just throw something together at the last minute).

After college, I've been an 80's girl and a devil. This year, I'm thinking of going as a cowgirl, saloon girl, or Little Bo Peep/Mary Had A Little Lamb.
