I don't get your reaction as a fellow rushee. It was community service and a worthwhile thing for her to do. Now if that is the ONLY thing she did that would be the real problem.

 I agree.

But to take it further, I also don't think this should be taken to the extreme. For example I can understand a prospect thinking I am going to the Delta RUSH, so I should indicate that by wearing red and white. I mean there is nothing on our website, or anywhere else that indicates certain colors should not be worn, so it is possible a prospect really would not know.

For example DSTRen, may have been told not to wear black, because the members would be wearing black at the RUSH and it was a matter of distinction.

Very honestly, imo, this whole prohibition of colors (which did not exist when I was a RUSHEE) is just another way to pre-reject folx.

LG, do you distinguish between service and philanthropy? I would wager that most of my chapter brothers do not, when it comes to the selection of members. (We also do not, as an organization, require proof of community service for membership.)

I did not know there was an issue with aspirants wearing black because at the rushes I attended Sorors did not wear black. A couple of rushees wore red. The Sorors glanced but didn't make a big deal. It did not hurt the young ladies' chances because they were stellar women (and are now stellar Sorors).

Black or grey was a first choice for me as an aspirant because I assumed the Deltas would wear red. I did not want to appear presumptuous or disrespectful. I also didn't want aspirants coming to me asking for applications or anything . We weren't told what not to wear, they just trusted that we'd have common sense not to wear red--and even wanted to see what colors we'd choose on our own. They just told us business attire/business casual.

We have worn black and we have worn red. But like your chapter we gave little notice to whether aspirants were wearing those colors. I guess as an alumnae chapter it was no big deal.

I hear ya about not wanting someone comungnup to you as a rushee asking for an application - LOL. But now that more controlled.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as an embarassing rush moment per se, since it was (thankfully) whispered and not posed as a general question before the entire group . . . but how about:

"Hey, does that [money] include our line jackets? 'Cause I want a white one. Do we get to pick?"

How to get "the look" from the members when you attend formal rush...

When I attended rush, it was the first rush in over a decade. The chapter had been suspended back in '95 for only God knows what! Anyways, at the rush, all the interested young ladies were introducing themselves, getting to know the members, asking questions, etc. When it became my turn, I asked: (and I kid you not)
"What did you guys do to get the chapter suspended for so long!?!"
I then proceeded to say,

"I mean, I've heard several appalling rumors about it, but which ones are true?"
I could've kept going, but lucky for me, another interest pinched me, hard. Of course, I then winced and yelped, "OUCH!"
Good thing the members found humor in it, they now call me "SOROR 'speak now, think later.'"
They did however, (much, much later) give me my answer and said: "Everyone wants to know anyways, good for you for being bold enough to ask!"
I was also advised to learn how to hold my tongue.

I remember at my rush...this one girl came in like an hour late with blue jeans a T-Shirt and a bubble jacket on. Then when it got to the question and answer period..she asked if the money could be paid in installments or if they could work out a payment plan of some sort...needless to say she didn't make it on my line...LOL

I do not have a funny rush story but I did not wear red or any colors that would be affiliated with another sorority to an alumnae rush because that was the unwritten rule when I was in undergrad and attended rush.

Now, what I don't appreciate is people wearing jeans or scrubs to rush. (Yes SCRUBS!) I understand that your work environment may be casual or require certain uniform, but change clothes in the bathroom or the car!

WOW some of these are hilarious!
Someone mentioned babies, my friend went to an AKA Rush two years ago, it was located on my side of the city. She is a mother of three and was unable to find a babysitter so she had to take the kids with, mind you her kids were 2, 3, and 7...and they were ALL going with her. I know it's wrong to laugh but she told me it started at 7 p.m., it was 6:30 when I saw her board the train car I was in and there was no way she would've made it. Lucky for her, the train went express and cut the commute by 20 mins. All the meanwhile, the kids are crying, wandering about getting antsy, as we approached her stop, she saw the bus getting to the station and JUMPED out of the train, one of her kids was still wandering about the car and she ran back to get HIM! LMAO!!!

She said it was a disaster, she was dressed nice for it and all, and she knows how to speak to people, but apparently her kids just couldn't sit still or be quiet throughout the event! Alas, she didn't make it...maybe next time she'll tell folks in advance if they can take care of their kids.
