I'm not sure how the popped collar ever got associated with the Southern fraternity man.

You might wanna try to bring a date, if she's attractive. I don't know.

As others have noted, it was very popular in the 80s.

Ok, define "short" shorts, please. I don't have a good visual in my mind at the moment. I'm picturing Jimmy Connor-type shortie tighty tennis shorts.

I assume (hope) you are just defining them compared to the long, baggy cargo-y type shorts, yes?

And I'm glad to read all 3 posts saying popping the collar is really not the thing (despite that LSU article). It's soooooo 80s (and sure, I did it), but I just saw a guy in the grocery store the other day with his collar flipped and thought it just looked silly. Polo shirt, flat collar, much better. Especially on grown men.

I have a pair that if I sit right, all pops out.

The guys at W&L wear shorts that are quite short compared to what the majority of men in America wear. Yes, it's partially a contrast to cargo shorts, but they're also just.... shorter. Like several inches above the knee, whereas American men in general now wear shorts at the knee or even (ugh) below the knee. Certainly not like 80s style workout shorts. Sorry I don't have a reference picture.

Flipping your collar up used to be associated with ultra preppy looks found in the Northeast. I've seen some of my uncles pictures from his fraternity days in the 80s at SMU and there is a lot of the tennis and lawn club, sweater with the flipped collar Polo underneath look going on.

YES, the popped collar polos were very big in the 80's especially in the Northeast as well as Ocean Pacific (OP) clothing, PCH clothing, the colorful jam shorts, bright neon shirts, and forgot the two-tune guess jeans.

Ohhhh, JAMS! I'd almost forgotten about those. And for girls, we had to match the rubber Madonna-bangle bracelets on our wrist with the colors in the shorts...

Saw another guy with a popped collar last night at a Starbucks, took everything in me not to go over and flip it down for him.

And let us not forget the black and white high-top reeboks, open of coarse.

I'm 6'2" and my shorts are usually around 6 - 7" inseams. I really can't rock the 5", just way too short for my size.

I just talked to some of my friends that are Alabama Phi Gams, their Islander went extremely well.

Ours was absolute madness, PhiGam, ill pm you some pictures... We had 3 waterfalls, a huge beach, tiki hut, and about 100 square yards of our backyard fenced in with 10 ft. high bamboo......
