Is Texas considered "south"? I know it's the most south you can get without being in Mexico, but it seems to never get mentioned when compared to "real south" states like Mississippi, Bama, SC, Georgia, Louisiana.

Texas is in a pure class of its own.....plain and simple. East Texas is very Southern, but the rest of Texas is completely different in cultures (mostly Southwestern), which is why it doesn't get included with the rest. Obviously the state being enormous has alot to do with it.
I do though think the fact that Texas has contributed so much to the South historically makes for a legitimate argument for it being included in the mix of Southern states.

No family there anymore. My grandfather and his side of the family were all from Missouri though.

Cape Girardeau and Jackson.
My family inherited a ranch with mostly Mississippi flood land on it... I think it has corn? on it. Only 100 acres or so, the rest of the family got the rest of it.

pinstrypes, I assure you as a southerner who lived for years in New Jersey- northerners think about it a LOT - and delight in being rude and obnoxious about their self-perceived superiority. "At least we won the War!" is their idea of a witty retort.
Even when they (Yankees) come south, they are so bad about it that a very popular bumper sticker is "I don't care how you did it up north!". Houston saw a lot of "Well, this is how we do it up north" during the last oil boom in the 80s (dating myself here).
I managed the crystal department at a Macy's store in Texas- couldn't get them to stock iced tea glasses for love or money. I was not surprised when they had to pull out of most of their Texas stores in the 80s. Their thinking was, we don't drink iced tea, so why carry the glasses? We are from NEW YORK, the only place in the world that matters.
I am glad you do not indulge in this type of rude and stupid thinking, but please believe me, it does exist.

I live in Dallas, and can tell ya, it shows very very little "southyness" to it. Actually, none.

As Mac will most likely to say, it depends on where in Dallas much like the rest of the state. Dallas has some terribly un-south portions including Plano, Addison, Richardson, and all of south Dallas. However, Highland Park (which may be one of my favorite cities ever) is very Southern and very old money. SMU is a blight on HP, in that it's mostly filled with Florida and California kids, Phi Delt and maybe SAE are the only ones who keep with Southern/Texan values.
There are also other conclaves in Texas (such as Tyler, which I figure Mac will say) that are very Southern. It varies greatly within the state however.

I've always thought of it as southwest--a combination of the south and the west. My daughter lives in Dallas and I don't feel like I have gone to the south when I visit her.
To me when I think of the "true" south, I think MS, AL, and GA. Not sure about the Carolinas, Louisiana, or Virginia. And Florida is a complete enigma. LOL

South Carolina and Tennessee are definitely in that same MS, AL, and GA Southern category.
