AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -
A highly contagious disease has Auburn University on alert.
The Alabama Department of Public Health notified Auburn University yesterday of a student who has been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. Pulmonary tuberculosis, more commonly known as TB, is highly contagious and can be fatal if it goes untreated.
As a precaution, the university is testing any students and faculty that may have come into contact with the individual.
"Right now we ask that only the students that we're contacting be tested," said Pam Barrett, Alabama Director of TB Control. "If we have a high number of people that have a TB infection from that initial group, then we would expand our investigation."
Barrett said there is a group of about sixty people that could have been exposed. They are expecting to have the test results Monday.
