AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - A highly contagious disease has Auburn University on alert. The Alabama Department of Public Health notified Auburn University yesterday of a student who has been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. Pulmonary tuberculosis, more commonly known as TB, is highly contagious and can be fatal if it goes untreated. As a precaution, the university is testing any students and faculty that may have come into contact with the individual. "Right now we ask that only the students that we're contacting be tested," said Pam Barrett, Alabama Director of TB Control. "If we have a high number of people that have a TB infection from that initial group, then we would expand our investigation." Barrett said there is a group of about sixty people that could have been exposed. They are expecting to have the test results Monday. Copyright 2012 WTVM. All rights reserved. |

This happened to my husband when he was in the dorms at Ga Tech. Even though he was tested when the incident happened, he didn't find out that he actually HAD TB until he was tested again for grad school admittance. He wasn't tested twice at the student health center, which his doctor says is protocol.

I was exposed a few times when I worked adult mental health. Each time, they did two tests.. one immediately to see if we were positive at the time of exposure and one later, which would indicate whether we were infected by the patient. They were probably more diligent because of worker's comp. If anybody tested positive the second time, worker's comp would have had to cover the treatment, paid for time off, etc. None of us ever got it.
