At my high school class reunions, lots of people just spend the whole night in the same little knot of people, when you'd think they'd take the opportunity to mingle more, considering we don't see each other very often.

I agree! My time as an active prepared me to make small talk for hours with people I don't know. It amazes me how people find one person to talk to in a room and never move. By then end of a party, I have met everyone and can probably tell you three things about them!
