I understand that they're not really replacing those old boxes -- they're just putting heatsinks on the old GPUs (graphics processors). The cause of the "red ring of death" is that the GPU on the orignal units tends to overheat. That of course isn't the end of the 360's problems though. There have been significant problems with drives which scratch disks as well. Also, I don't like loud fans on computers. I'm a little OCD in that regard I guess.
