The song being song was a pirate song that called the Brethren (the pirates) together. Calypso doesn't actually have anything to do with the song itself.
The Brethren were called because of the terrible conditions that the pirates were suffering under the East India Trading Co.

Heave ho, thieves and beggars, never shall we die!
Calypso was bound by the Nine Pirate Lords at their first meeting. Davy Jones was pissed that she ldid not wait for him (as being fickle is in her nature). The Pirate Lords agreed, likely because the sea is a harsh enough mistress without having to worry about a goddess being pissed off at you.
Barbossa wanted to relase Calypso, expecting her favor in return. However, that's not how the sea, nor a sea goddess, works. She was just damned pissed off, hence the maelstrom. (Also, I think that Barbossa just loves the sea, did you see the look on his face while steering the Pearl into the whirlpool? His third motivation would be recompense for Calypso/Tia Dalma's resurrecting him.)

Phew. Hope that helps. I think they left her storyline too open, but if you take into consideration that sailors both love and fear the sea you can understand the character they were creating for her.
