It will be very chilly and windy in MV, and only the locals will be there and a lot of stores are only open seasonally.

However, if you don't mind it being in the 50s during the day and 30s at night, it is lovely (I'm a native New Englander so I love the beach at any time of year!).

If you are looking at the steamship from NYC, I don't think it runs in late October, but double check.
There's definitely one out of RI because I've taken it, but I agree that in October it'll be too cold to truly enjoy MV or any of the small, tourist islands at their fullest. Also, if the weather's not good and you get at all seasick (like I do) you could end up puking on a 5-year-old on the ferry by accident (like I did). Don't do that

My dad is native to Brooklyn so I've been there a few times-if you do go to Brooklyn then Cuccio's Bakery has delicious cookies and L & B Spumoni Gardens has delicious pizza. If you do feel strangely compelled to drive the 3+ hours out to Rhode Island, for some reason, I can recommend lots of fun things to do there too.
