Finally! Some years ago I was supposed to go to NYC but that didn't work out. Well, I will be there for the PhotoPlus Expo in late October.
Places I plan to go to visit include:
World Trade Center
B&H Photo
NY Public Library
All the outdoor ice rinks if they are open
Ice rink at Chelsea Piers
Lady Liberty
Central Park
Coney Island


The Hamptons ( if time permits)
Martha's Vineyard (if time permits)

I have 7 days. Any suggestions?

I'm a Long Island girl and I don't get into the City much, but I must suggest Bryant Park. I love it there in the winter with all the little shops. There is an ice rink too as well as one in Central Park. I don't know if they are open in October though, the weather in October can be warm one day then cold the next, even late in the month. I remember one Halloween in the 70s and another with snow.

The Museum of Natural History or The Met would be nice to visit too.

In October there will be plenty of Halloween attractions if you are into that.

The New York Public Library is one of my favorite places to visit. I like poking around in libraries all over the place and the NYPL is one of the most impressive. If you can, take in a Broadway show (we usually see what shows have half-price tickets).

If you're near the UN, take a peak at the Beekman Tower Hotel. It was originally built in the 1920s as a residence for NPC women. At one time, it was the tallest building in the neighborhood. Now it is one of the smallest structures.

If you have the time to give, Ellis Island is really moving. Also, you can fully appreciate the Statue of Liberty either from Battery Park or on your way to Ellis Island. No need to actually step onto the island unless looking up her nose is on your bucket list. But plan at least 4 hours for Ellis Island and 6 is probably more realistic unless you get lucky with crowds.

Fifth Avenue! Especially Tiffany & Co. Unfortunately, Fortunoff is long gone. :(

The Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art are two of my favorites. Also check out the Frick Collection at 70th and 5th. A lovely collection, but small enough that you can go through it in a couple of hours and not get "museumed out".

Rockefeller Center is also a good place to visit. You won't get to see all the Christmas decorations, but you also won't get trampled - once the tree is lit, it's a zoo.

Take a stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge. It's about a mile, relaxing, you can watch the cars zip by under you, it's great for taking pictures, and you can have lunch in Brooklyn when you get across. It's one of my favorite things to do in NYC.. and it's free :)

Two other free things that I enjoy: the Staten Island ferry and the High Line park (http://www.thehighline.org/)

Martha's Vineyard is **quite** a hike from New York. Going there will eat up an entire day, at least; if you take the Seastreak, it's a 5 hour trip, one way (http://www.seastreak.com/marthas.aspx). I might give MV its own trip another time.

Definitely the Met or Museum of Natural History. Please note that these museums have "suggested admission" - so if you want to go to the Met but don't have $25 to shell out, you can pay what you wish.

Staten Island Ferry. You get great views of downtown Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, and it's free!

Also, the Strand! Best used bookstore anywhere.

Martha's Vineyard is in MA, you'd have to drive through CT, the tip of RI, then down to Cape Cod, MA to get the ferry to MV. The ferry will be subject to the weather and the water can be very choppy at that time of year. It will be very chilly and windy in MV, and only the locals will be there and a lot of stores are only open seasonally.

However, if you don't mind it being in the 50s during the day and 30s at night, it is lovely (I'm a native New Englander so I love the beach at any time of year!).

If you are looking at the steamship from NYC, I don't think it runs in late October, but double check.

There's definitely one out of RI because I've taken it, but I agree that in October it'll be too cold to truly enjoy MV or any of the small, tourist islands at their fullest. Also, if the weather's not good and you get at all seasick (like I do) you could end up puking on a 5-year-old on the ferry by accident (like I did). Don't do that:p

My dad is native to Brooklyn so I've been there a few times-if you do go to Brooklyn then Cuccio's Bakery has delicious cookies and L & B Spumoni Gardens has delicious pizza. If you do feel strangely compelled to drive the 3+ hours out to Rhode Island, for some reason, I can recommend lots of fun things to do there too.

My dad is native to Brooklyn too! Bensonhurst and Carroll Gardens/South Brooklyn. We loved going to Spumoni Gardens!

If you can make it to Prospect Park, Cataldo's on Vanderbilt and Dean has the best pizza. They were on an episode of A Stand Up Mother on WE, and they also have an amazing niece in Detroit who is a Phi Mu ;)

Wow, I totally missed the Martha's Vineyard thing. Don't waste your time going there on this trip. There is a ferry/boat that leaves out of New York, but it's a long ride. It won't be worth it. Wait until you take a trip to New England (in the spring/summer) to do that :)
