Bklyndelta,
My intention was not to be sarcastic to anyone; it just seemed as if people started making this colossal deal over their names.
You are exactly right, To each his/her own. If that were the case, why did you respond with such a defensive/passionate response?
It was not my intention to criticize anyone, believe me, I of all people cannot criticize anyone. Nevertheless, I still say "big deal!" It's just a name. She didn't ask for your rituals!

If it is such a big secret, then we need to stop wearing our names for everyone to see on our jackets and shirts. There is no secret, unless it is the actual meaning behind the name. Most names you can figure out what they mean, unless they are initials.

I response to an upper response...I don't see the problem with asking nicknames. I am from Delta Upsilon (a non-secret) fraternity, and we have no problems with making our rites, nicknames, etc. open to the public. So, if someone asks you what your nickname is (and you are part of a secret fraternity)...don''t answer the question..there is no need to chew the asker out...
By the way..my nickname is Tang, because when I was initiated I did this wierd little orangatang dance, with my arms up in the air..

I am in a brand-new local at my university, and right now all of our members are founding sisters. Giving nicknames was kind of an important order of business, although some girls are still waiting for one because we don't want to force them...waiting for something fitting to dawn on us is important. Our president Rebecca's nickname is Reba. Our VP is Princess b/c of her mannerisms (the hair, the cell phone, the pocketbooks, the outfits...you just gotta know her), and mine is Cheerleader, b/c I kind of adopted a lot of the PR/Social Roles 'cuz I'm so extroverted. I think having your nickname embroidered on the sleeve of a sweatshirt is a great idea! I think that it's important that one's nickname is made up by their sisters for sorority reasons, but you should be as proud of your niche in the the sorority (signified by the fact that sisters took the time and consideration to give you a unique nickname) as you are of your Greek letters.

Many other greeks in school knew my nickname too from intramurals. My brothers called me Cha-Cha. There is a story behind that but I will leave you to your imagination. I had friends in another fraternity that we hung out with sometimes that called me Tonka.

My nickname is Hotseat. I think its the coolest nickname too and my pledgebro's still call me that today on occasion(initiated Fall 98). Its a long story but i love my nickname and everyone should be proud of theirs.
