Hi Everyone!

My name is Chelsea and I graduated with a BA in May but I'm doing 2 years of Post-BA work at my undergraduate institution to get my secondary education teaching license. My alma mater has three NPC sororities that I didn't "click" with and so I began inquiring about expanding our Greek life. Two freshman picked up my idea and our exploratory committee is being formed at the present. If my college forms a colony, I'd like to be a member of the new sorority because I am so passionate about it. Would it be possible? I'm still technically a student and classified Post-BA/5th year undergraduate. I'd love to serve as an alumnus and continue to actively help them in the future. I'm still involved in the interest group for the sorority which formed at the mid-point of my senior year. Nice to meet you all. I'd love input on my situation.

So, you want to be Greek but, something didn't "click" with any of the three NPC sororities? What didn't "click" with them?

Is the interest group you mention functioning as a sorority? That is, do you have meetings, initiations, bigs and littles, participate in the campus Greek community? Or is the exploratory committee just a small group of women petitioning the school/Panhellenic to invite an NPC group to colonize from the ground up?

If you're a member of an interest group that functioned as a sorority that was instrumental in bringing a new NPC to campus, they most likely will offer alumnae membership to graduated members (which by the time they chartered would probably include you, post BA or not).

If the colony would be from the ground up, we can't tell you whether you would be considered for any sort of membership - "passion" or not. You also probably don't want to take the step of being initiated before any colony charters.

I didn't pursue Formal Recruitment until Sophomore year and although the three existing NPC chapters do include friends of mine but for some reason or another there just wasn't an agreement in each group to offer me a bid. Therefore, I did not find a place in the existing chapters but maintained my individual relationships. Our interest group is instrumental and would be the beginning group after our exploratory committee petitions to form a colony and a sorority has expressed interest. I did hope alumnae membership is an option and knowing it could be is good news. I know one of the freshman leaders and so far has been committed to including me.

That doesn't answer my question. Is the interest group currently functioning as a sorority and doing the things I mentioned? (This is a yes or no question.)

The answer then is no. My next question is whether it would be beneficial for our group to do this. Our interest group is very newly formed but that is not to say it could not take on these functions in the upcoming semester. Our exploratory committee is faculty, alumni, current Greeks, etc. determining if our school can handle another sorority and finding organizations interested in colonization. Our interest group is a group of women including myself interested in Greek life who would be the starting members in a colony of the new sorority.

IMO yes.

Functioning as a sorority shows that there IS a need for a 4th sorority. Waiting around for a committee's decision doesn't show much gumption or drive. These are things that sororities look for in interest groups/colonizing members. You're not at a school that sororities are banging down the doors to enter (as opposed to a Mizzou or someplace like that) so you're probably going to be expected to be pretty self-sufficient from the jump.
