thanks for your suggestions everyone!
"ceremony"
"Founders Day"
"ceremony for alumnae"
"ceremony for alumnae on Founders Day"

Those mean different things across GLOs. Talk to your sorority sisters.

I agree. Not to mention, having a "reaffiliation" or "rededication" ceremony may be seen as condescending or rude. If a collegiate suggested to me as an AOII alum that I needed to rededicate myself to AOII, I'd remind her that I'd probably been an AOII longer than she'd been alive. I would definitely run this by DPhiE alumnae before planning such an event.

I'm hoping that you mean this in an "each organization has their own special rituals, so don't assume that they all have the same ones" kind of way, rather than "rededication ceremonies are a dumb idea." I didn't want to jump down your throat over a possible misunderstanding on my part.

Can you clarify what you meant here?

That's what I mean...ask your alumnae if this is done. If not, it may come off as a bunch of collegians slapping the alumnae on the wrist for not being active enough.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I think collegians can come up with an idea and not flesh out what their goals are. If they want to encourage alumnae to be more active with the chapter, it's a fine line to draw them in without shaming them. It would be nice to have a program that is already set up for this, but if they don't have one, I think it's very important for them to work with an alum to do this so that it is perceived the way they mean for it to be perceived.

All of that highlights why this topic varies across GLOs.

You can contact John, the site admin, if you want to change your username. However, as you are new, you may prefer simply to register with a new name.

Also, if you're a DPhiE, I'll hazard a guess that you're female. In which case, your alums are alumnae, not alumni.

Alumnus = male singular
Alumna = female singular
Alumni = male plural
Alumnae = female plural
Alumni is also used for a mixed gender group. You could have 185623 women and 1 man in the group, and they would be "alumni" because of the one man.

I guess our quandry is - without using big words - what exactly do you want this ceremony to do/accomplish/convey?

Ugh. The Alumnae Relations Coordinator for my home chapter sends out emails addressed "Hello alum!" every month, and it drives me batty. Although, when I was active we didn't have an email distribution list even so I suppose they're better off than the were when I was there!

One (and I'm pretty sure only one) NPC sorority can correctly use alumni, even though the one alumnus is long dead.

we just want an event for the alumnae that will bring them back together- but not just have a drinking alumnae event, you know? we think it would be great to bring that back into the chapter room and have a ritual/ceremony with something after like a luncheon or something.

ive had our ritualist look for anything about a reaffiliation in our files but she cant find much so ill have to do some digging.

any ideas?

You get monthly emails? I received a printed invitation to IRD in the mail last week which resulted in a case of the vapors and retiring to my fainting couch to recover. I think the invitation was the result of a conversation with an alumna where I shared the lack of communication/invitation from the local collegiate chapter. I haven't moved in four years, or changed my email address, name, or phone number, and IHQ contacts me on the regular. IHQ sent me an e-vite to an alumna meeting at the house, even. I figure that some sister says she'll email, call, text, and never follows through, or it is on facebook and I'm not that into facebook. I refuse to attend any event without a proper invitation, and I only expect three a year. Initiation, IRD, and Feast of Roses, and Initiation and Feast of Roses could happen again in the spring. We have a lot of silver squirrels locally, so written invitations aren't an outdated expectation. I always know when events are, I just don't go due to a conflict or lack of a real invitation sent in a timely manner.

I also retreated to my fainting couch with smelling salts tonight as I was looking at a chapter webpage where alumni was used more than once, and there was a link to NATIONALS. I've never heard of this Nationals they mention, and this chapter page was on their IHQ information page. Maybe Nationals exists through a door in my wardrobe with all of my mailed invitations?

Why not have the alumnae help the collegians with ritual/ceremonies by holding a practice? The alumnae can stand in as initiates and the collegians can hold the service and do a run through. For the newest members this will allow them to see the service again, and allow alumnae to have the same experience while providing a service to the collegiate chapter.

If that's too elaborate or not doable, maybe an activity or presentation about what makes DPhiE important to these women, and reacquainting women with DPhiE and how they can be involved locally and nationally to constantly have a feeling of "affiliation" until the next alumnae event.
