Lets go to Merriam- Websters Collegiate Dictionary shall we,
www.m-w.com

Main Entry: soda pop
Function: noun
Date: 1863
: a beverage consisting of soda water, flavoring, and a sweet syrup

So the midwesterners are kinda correct when they call it POP, I dont call it pop nor will I ever call it pop, but websters does

Main Entry: Coke
Pronunciation: 'kOk
Function: trademark
-- used for a cola drink

So Coke is used for a cola drink, so that means pepsi can be called coke as well according to websters. But not fruit sodas.

Ohio

Neither the North or the Midwest are willing to claim Ohio! Are we really that bad?? Anyway, in Cincinnati we have a distinctly strange way of doing things. Almost everyone says Pop here. Its always "grillin out" never "barbqin". We see "please" when we want someone to repeat themselves (this comes from our German roots). People from further North like to make fun of us for being afraid to drive in snow storms. This is something that really gets on our nerves! When it snows here, it is almost always on top of atleast 1 inch of ice. This makes driving more than a little difficult. And the strangest of them all- if during the winter months, the temperature rises above 50 degrees, people will walk around in shorts and t-shirts and drive with their windows down. This is absolutely ridiculous- its not warm enough for that unless its 65 or above!

Wink

I love this thread!! I have never been on the other side of the Mississippi, but I have traveled all up and down the East coast and the differences are like !

I personally say soda, althought I do not drink it.

North Fla is VERY MUCH the South, some of it is just as country as any where in rural GA or AL.

South FL is like another country all together, it is just a mixture of Caribbean cultures and old folks.

To the TKE

Well, Atlanta's still, like, Coke city either way... you can't drive ten feet without seeing a sign... but thanks for clearing that up!

Oh, and by the way, YEAH the south rules!;-)

Do you say you want a soda if you really want a Dr. Pepper? And if I wanted a Pepsi (ick ick ick... why I'd ever want a Pepsi is beyond me!) I'd ask for "Pepsi" and if I wanted an orange coke, yeah, I'd say orange coke. But if I just want any old coke ( or soda, pop, whatever) than I'd say "Coke."
I say soda not Coke not pop. Anyway I like Pepsi better than Coke!

Wonder what that makes you, for bumping at 7 1/2 year old thread to say this?

What's up with all of the bumped threads lately? Have we run out of interesting topics?

The poster who bumped this thread has deleted her post, making kddani's response seem oddly placed. Now, why VBB bumped this of all threads is beyond me.

To avoid a hijacking, I call all of it Coke. (Very similar to how I call all tissues Kleenexes, and all small bandages Band-Aids.)

28. Yes, yes it is. Not frightening, but strange. People from Minnesota don't get out of Minnesota enough.

34. Then I guess I am allowed to be a Northerner. I always knew I wasn't a Southerner, but I'm no arrogant New Englander, either.

Correction for TKEmz894

Sorry TKEmz894, but you're wrong about both Coca-Cola and Delta.

The aviation company that started out what was to become Delta Airlines, Huff Daland Dusters, was founded in Macon, GA, moved to Monroe, LA, and then moved back to Atlanta, GA.

The first Coca-Cola recipe was invented in Columbus, GA, and the first sales were in Atlanta, GA (also the headquarters of Coke ever since).

Google and Wikipedia are your friends.

History of Delta Airlines (Wikipedia)
Delta Through the Decades (Delta Airlines, via Google)

History of Coca-Cola (Wikipedia sub-article)
Coca-Cola History (The Coca-Cola Company)

As an Atlantan, born, raised and educated (and the child of two employees of the Coca-Cola Company), I had to set the record straight!

But of course I agree that the South is awesome!

Edit: I just realized that even though this thread is still active, the post I've replied to is from 2002.
