5.8 earthquake in southern california
at 11:42 there was an earthquake in the chino hills area, 29 miles south of la. it really didn't feel like a 5.8, it felt worse.the one thing i won't forget about this is the huge jolt at the end. a lot of things fell of shelves and the jolt at the end made more things fall of shelves.
but everything is ok in my house and i'm ok.

Glad to know you're okay, oclady21! We're watching MSNBC coverage at work right now.

I thought I read that the closer to the surface the quake occurs effects how much people "feel" it. Maybe the quake wasn't too far down?
Glad you are ok! I can't imagine what that feels like!

We had a magnitude 6.7 quake in October 2006 and I was surprised that it only registered 6.7. It felt wayyyyy stronger than that.
My friend in LA just posted on Twitter and she was surprised that it was only a 5.8 -- she thought it was stronger as well.

The USGS is saying it was 8.5 miles down (+/- 0.4 mi). Not sure what effect that had on how anyone felt it, but it was a bit more excitement than we've had in a little while. Everyone's fine here at my work. Official word is apparently a 5.4 for this one.

Did not feel it at all whatsoever. I was on the road at the time. My mom felt a jolt at her house and my dad said the building he was in shook.
I never seem to feel earthquakes. About five years ago one happened while I was at work. It was interesting that only some people felt it even though we were in the same building; a couple hundred miles from the epicenter.

Well, I'm hours away from SoCal, but I think it's funny that I knew about the quake because Facebook status updates. Hehe!

I'm good, and I only live about 8 miles from the epicenter...it felt strong...I'll tell you that much. My poor kitties were freaking out after it. They're still a little spooked. Nothing broken at my house, thankfully...what a great way to go on vacation! We leave today for the Caribbean.

I am good. I was standing outside chatting with my neighbor watering when it happened. We live 40 minutes from chino hills and it was very wavy in motion. My windows ratttled pretty good and knocked a few things down. My brother and sister in law live in glendora and it was very jolty down that way from her report.

broken.
we lost a cermanic cactus plant and an antique teapot given to my dad by my grandma. also a couple of bottles broken in the house and some draws were ajar.
i guess i felt it more than in north orange county because we are only about 20 minutes away from chino hills. i feel so sad about the antique breaking.

I'm glad some of our SoCal GCers are good, hope all the rest are fine as well!
I always wondered why some people never seem to feel earthquakes as well. When I was living in the Bay Area we had a few strong ones come through and I never felt them. I remember one time I was outside talking with a friend, and people come running out of the dorms. Everyone was evacuated cause supposedly the building was shaking. I never felt ANYTHING. In fact my friend and I looked at each other like and we were standing within 5 feet of the building.

We were sitting on the beach in Coronado and it was a pretty good shaker all the way down here! Seems like it lasted almost a minute, maybe not as long or shaky as the Northridge quake, but enough to get your attention.
Checked in with my folks in Orange County, they had a few things fall off the walls but nothing big. I haven't seen the news yet so I don't know if there was any major damage.
Other than that, it was still a perfect beach day!

I was at work with my kinder kids when it struck. My poor students. I had not taught them about Drop & Cover yet as it is only the beginning of the 4th week of school but I sure taught them after. It took a long while to calm them down.
