She married John Rolfe in real life and I think maybe kinda sorta the second Pocahontas movie. Her father was chief of the tribe thus making her an "Indian princess" to the extent such things existed.

Does anyone else have a problem with the first black Disney princess being a "chambermaid?"

I also thought that was kind of strange...

Also, just a wild guess, but is the "debutante" girl going to be white? The Prince is described as European, and the villain is African-American and a "voodoo" doctor. Talk about stereotypes.

It's kind of ridiculous that it took this long for Disney to have a black princess, though.

Maddy is Disney's first ANIMATED black princess. Elton John's Aida was produced by Disney (at least at one point), and Aida is a Nubian princess.

This storyline actually sounds an eensy weensy like Aida, IMHO...just replace the debutante with Amneris (princess and future pharoah) and the European prince with Radames (Amneris' fiance).

ETA: Disney's "Princess" collection actually includes non-royalty. Right now, I can only think of Mulan, but there might be another one.

Tinkerbell is in the princess collection, and sometimes Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and Maid Marian from Robin Hood.

Maid Marian was like King Richard's nephew though wasn't she? She's totally almost sorta kinda a princess.

As for the first black princess being a chambermaid, most of Disney's Princesses don't start their stories out being royalty. Cinderella being the primary example. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty spend more time in cottages than castles. Belle was just a silly girl who reads. And as mentioned, Tink and Mulan were never royalty. Jasmine and Ariel are really the only "Princesses" (Well and Nala but as she's a non-anthropomorphic animal princess she doesn't count )

I think she would be his NIECE...but yeah, still a sort-of royal.

Nala wasn't a princess...that would make her Simba's sister, and that's just ewww...(even for lions).

I don't remember any version of Robin Hood where Marion is Richard's niece. And in the Disney version, Marion is a vixen, while King Richard the Lionheart and his brother John are, appropriately, lions. So, unless there's some cross-species adoption going on . . . .

I'm ready for my daughter to grow out of Disney princesses, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

Wow... yeah neice. *doh* Mysticcat, isn't she the neice in Prince of Theives? I swear that's why Nottingham wanted to marry her. (Not saying that's any sort of official rendition or anything)

Who else would be Nala's father? Mufasa and Scar were the only males. Clearly Scar wasn't getting any. Simba was just unusual in that he didn't go to another pride for a mate. Nala would have had to be a good deal older than Simba NOT to be related to him and since they're cubs together...

Yes... Lion King promotes incest among our children. And THEN Lion King 2 has Kiara and Kovu. Kovu is the son of one of the lionesses who left with Scar (but not actually Scar's son) Thus he must also be Mufasa's son and is marrying his neice.

/creeped you out yet?

According to this site....
Quote:
The main difference in this Disney feature is that the characters are all depicted as different forest animals. Both Robin Hood and Maid Marian are foxes, Little John is a bear, Prince John and King Richard are lions, and Friar Tuck is a large badger. Other animals rounding up the cast include snakes, rabbits, chickens, roosters, turtles, alligators, vultures, elephants, rhinos, dogs, and wolves. While most families remain within the same species (such as the rabbit family), not all of the relationships make sense. For example, Maid Marian, a vixen, is the King Richard’s, a lion’s, niece. All of the animals live in the city of Nottingham where Prince John is passing by on a tour of the countryside. Robin Hood, in turn, hides out in Sherwood Forest with his best friend Little John and his band of merry men. Most of the time they are trying to find new ways to steal from the nobility, or running away from the law, but when Prince John comes to town, bringing Maid Marian, things change.

Plus, remember the line "King Richard is going to have an outlaw for an in-law"....
