Crazy Rumors from Rush!
BamaDad: "I heard an interesting item today from recruitment at the University of Alabama. Rumor: Phi Mu will not ask girls back if they touched the rail while descending the spiral staircase at the Phi Mu house. Anyone heard similar stories? Sounds pretty superstitious to me, but I'm only a Dad. Crazy or what?"
When I saw this post on the Rush Thread Addicts thread I knew I had to start this as a topic. When I went through rush last year I heard some of the craziest rumors about some houses. I thought it would be funny to hear the things other people heard.
Please note: If your rumor is offensive please don't state the name of the house! Thanks.
Here's two I heard last year.
Kappa Delta: They won't ask you back if you aren't a blonde or aren't a legacy.
So obviously not true. I am proud to be a beautiful brunette and not a legacy to any sorority!
Alpha Delta Pi: They won't ask you back if you eat any of the food they give you.
Seriously this is just ridiculous. It's rude to not eat the food they spent time preparing for you!
So feel free to post any other crazy rumors you heard while going through recruitment. There are some wild ones.

One of the biggest rumors I remember hearing was that all of the sororities would take the girls they DIDN'T want into a certain room or area of the house during the first parties.
When I was on the other side, I actually had a girl ask me if I was taking her to the reject room! I thought I was going to have to ditch my rotation group and go back to the front room of the house with her because she was so sure about it!

When I went through rush, I heard that several houses had requirements about how long girls had to live in the south in order to pledge. One was said to require lifetime in the south, while another was said to accept only girls who had lived in the south for 5+ years.
You can imagine how scary this was for a girl who had only moved to the south two years earlier!!!
What ridiculous rumors people come up with, huh?

Well shoot how to those chapters w/o houses keep up that kind of reputation! I mean at my school we took all the "reject" rushees out in the utility hallway of the student center. The cement floors really got our feelings across :roll eyes:
lol I wonder where people get these ideas!

Craziness!
I think the people who start rumors are friends who are unsupportive of a girl going through rush. They come up with these ridiculous statements to try and scare the girls out of going through with recruitment. I think a lot of media supports these types of rumors too. I remember one episode of step by step I saw when I was little where all the girls in this one sorority wanted Dana to join because she was a size 2 and they all had to be size 2 so they could trade clothes. When you see this as a little girl it really makes sorority life seem bad and scary.
I remember last year when I went through all these girls talking about how one sorority was known to only let in girls who had been cheerleaders, and the girls spreading this rumor even went on to claim that if you said you had been they would call the school/organization you had cheered for to confirm it. Like the sorority members have time to be calling all kinds of cheerleading squads to see if a girl was on it! I hope all you PNMS out there are ignoring these silly rumors!

This thread discusses rumors (with sororities NOT named of course because of recruitment). It's called "Tent Talk".

At many schools that hold recruitment during August, the heat is unbearable. The chapters pay to rent tents and fans outside of their houses so that the PNMs and their recruitment counselors have some shade as they wait to go into the next party. During this time, the PNMs are standing around waiting and a lot of gossip starts to fly-- Hence it is called Tent Talk. Also known as The Word on The Street.

Several girls heard a rumor involving a certain house. We advised our D to ignore it. She agreed, stating she never considered that kind of talk anyway. Fortunately, the other girls she discussed it with also chose to ignore the talk.

Unfortunately, a lot of rumors get started based on a sorority's name and what rhymes with it. It amazes me how quick some people are to believe the stories.

We had a rumor about an org on our campus that required their members to get a specific piercing or a tattoo (don't think it was supposed to be a specific one) when they joined...

I know we've talked about this before on other threads, but these rumors are worth mentioning again...
ABC does not make you strip down to your undies and stand on a table so they can circle your fat with a black sharpie marker.
XYZ does not have a mandatory bible study.
LMN does not subtly signal to a sister that a PNM's a dud if she places her hand on the PNM's shoulder.
TUV does not set its new members aside into 4 groups at chapter retreat and tell them, "We picked Group A because you're smart. We picked Group B because you're the pretty girls. We picked Group C because you're involved on campus. We picked Group D because you're good at sports and we want to win the intramurals title."
XYZ does not give their members clothing and make-up makeovers as part of its standard chapter practice, either!
You don't have to be Jewish to join DPhiE or SDT or AEPhi! You don't have to be Christian to become a member of Theta Phi Alpha! Etc.

THANK YOU for mentioning this. AEPhis certainly recognize the Jewish heritage of our sorority, but being Jewish is not a requirement for membership. There are many AEPhi chapters that are VERY diverse in terms of religion.

THE FOLLOWING RUMORS I'VE HEARD ARE NOT TRUE:
*AAA WILL NOT make you sleep with boys to get initiated.
*CCC WILL NOT cut you if you mention that you go to church.
*QQQ will not make you drink an entire keg by yourself in order to get initiated.
*VV WILL NOT pat you on the back to check the size of your pref dress and cut you if you're above a size 2.
*TT DOES NOT require you to purchase a tanning package if you're extended a bid.
*MM DOES NOT make you serenade all the fraternities on Main St in your undies.
*BB DOES NOT circle your fat.
