The "Mother's Act" Lables Pregnancy as a Mental Illness!

Please read this very important article about how our government is trying to lable pregnancy as a mental illness. If the "Mother's Act" is passed, it could mean that doctors will be forced to encourage pregnant women to take unsafe and experimental psychotic drugs during their pregnancies to prevent post-partum depression as opposed to educating people about the benefits of getting quality nutrition before, during, and after pregnancy.

What Can You Do? Click the links below to sign a petition and send a letter to your State representatives.

1) Go to my CapWiz page and with two clicks of a mouse send an opposition letter to your Senators.
2) Sign this petition, which is being used to pressure Senators on the HELP committee.

I certainly didn't get all of that from reading the Bill. And what can our State representatives do?

Excuse the forum crash, but I feel like I need to respond to this because the website source of the headline is suspect as it is a natural wellness company trying to market its "natural birth services" as it demonizes this bill as forcing meds on pregnant women by "Big Pharma".

In reading the actual bill, it's clear the intent is to provide screening, access to information and resources for postpartum women and their families, there is no mention of labeling pregnancy as a mental illness.

As a side note, this bill was dropped in May 2007, it only has 9 cosponsors, it's clear it's languishing in committee. It was previously introduced in June 2006, garnered all of 3 cosponsors, and also died in committee.

It seems this Senator from NJ has a constituency at home he is aiming to please by introducing this legislation, even though it continues to stall.

The "wellness" website is trying to get people worked up by misrepresenting this "for show" piece of legislation to garner business; this bill, first of all, has no legs, and secondly, is not what they're presenting. Just wanted to offer the other side of the story...

Exactly! The Bill's status is "introduced May 11, 2007." Then it went to committee. And as we all know more bills languish/die in committee than reach the point of debate.

We really ned to be careful about how we spread information. There are a lot of shysters out here on the Net.

Regarding the article, I am very familiar with the author Byron Richards (a renowned certified nutritionist), his site, and the products since I've purchased some of the supplements myself (and they are great by the way) and read two of his books (also wonderful, one of them I call my nutrition bible), which is why I received the article. There is no doubt in my mind that the author is passionate about this cause and there seems to be a whole lot more to it than the bill's content implies.

One of the organizations behind this effort to challenge the Mother's Act is called "Unite For Life" at http://www.uniteforlife.org/. There are also youtube testimonials out there from mothers who say that they have already been affected by the proposed act: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LQW23XCmOCw.

How can someone be affected by a Bill that is languishing in committee and will probably never make it to debate? Since you have read Richards' books, etc., have you even read the Bill?

I agree, reading the actual bill rather than the propaganda from blog-based sites with an agenda will provide a more thorough understanding of what the legislation (that will die in committee, as it did last year) proposes.

And this is from the website you listed above:
Are you superstitious? Someone sent us this: Add the numbers in S. 1375 (1, 3, 7, 5) and H.R. 20 (2,0) and see what you get. 18. Three sixes!
This is not rational or productive thinking.

Here is a link to the text of the act: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill...bill=s110-1375.

You can also track its progress from this site.
