SAE kicked off campus
My cousin goes to UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County)
I was trying to get her to rush the UMBC chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon, and she told me that SAE got kicked off campus for hazing really bad. Apparently this chapter made their members "insert" a lolipop into a stripper and then put it into their own mouths! she is so freaked out about greek life now. Also, they were using the philanthropy money they raised on alcohol for parties where PMN were present. She is really into charity work, but now thinks that greeks dont care about their charities. Supposedly they were put on probabtion and told they could not recruit or hold events for a year They did anyway, and i believe they are kicked off campus indefinitely now.
How can i explain to her this is an isolated incident that does not represent Sigma Alpha Epsilon wholly as a national organization or Greek Life at all.
I think things like this make us all look really bad.

Freaking a, if they're going to use a stock photo of a bottle of alcohol, couldn't they at least use one of Johnnie Walker Blue?

I agree with your comment that any kind of activity like this, done by any chapter of any GLO, makes us all look very bad.
As does second hand stories which you seemed to have added to the
Tuesday August 28, 2007 news story.

If you really want for her to become involved in Greek Life, give her another perspective. For instance, if she is freaked out about Greeks in general based on this one incident that happened at her college, you may also remind her that the campus did handle the situation and they were kicked off campus (basically that will show her that the campus and National Council of the fraternity that was kicked off campus did not allow hazing to happen and continue and they took measures to end it i.e. kicking the fraternity off campus). Also, this is just ONE incident that happened, remind her of all of the positive things that being apart of Greek Life can bring and help her realize that hazing is not tolerated and that will not happen if she chooses to join a sorority. If she does choose to join a sorority and hazing does occur, then it is not the acceptable way things should be done and she should inform the Greek Council.

Does $750 seem like a small fine to any one else?

Very well written and said Hayley2007.
And yes, SAE National does not take very kindly to hazing.
Or violations of RM policies.

My old late chapter was fined, IIRC, about $400 for mis-appropriate use of fire fighting equipment. Several Brothers used a fire hose to prevent members of two other Fraternities from entering a second floor window during a riot.
The other Fraternities were fined about half as much.
So as for fine amount, it may be what is in schools policies.

Where i hope that is true, in this case I'm not so sure b/c they were still recognized by SAE national and threatening to sue UMBC.
I believe the $750 fine was actually the cost of a class every member was required to take as part of their terms to return in fall '08......none of them did.
Deepher4Life - you should try contacting the umbc deephers and let them know your cousin is there. Chances are the only ones who are going to change her mind at this point are members of the umbc greek community.

Since I have seen no news reports, out side of what was linked here, I can not reply directly to your posting.
I do know that SAE National as "cleaned house" several times this year for hazing/RM issuies at several chapters/campus's.
As they did to mine several years ago.
And as a reader of this section of GC would see, this has also happened to other GLO's as well.

These posts are getting very close to being inappropriate. I'd really appreciate it if y'all would at least let us know where your information is coming from.

This story is like a game of telephone
This story always gives me a good laugh. I am a current brother in the active Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at UMBC.
In actuality, we were kicked off campus because a brother was caught drinking a beer in letters. A picture was posted on Facebook with the underage member in his letters holding a beer. Yes, totally justified. Definitely in the wrong. We know that.
The story was blown out of proportion to make it seem like we were forcing potential members to conduct sexual acts with an illegal stripper.
One, strippers are legal.
Two, no one was forced to do anything with a stripper. Do you think a stripper would let them? And even if she did, do you think a young guy in college wouldn't want to do something? Sounds disgusting, but I can promise you, if a sexual act was denied by anyone in that situation, it would have been the stripper, not the hormonal, fresh out of high school, looking for the "college experience" kid.
Regardless, we were bashed with more than we deserved, we paid our suspension and we are back on campus.

Which is why, in general, we frown upon rumors and hearsay in this particular section of GC. At any rate, welcome, and I hope you stay around.

Y'know, I haven't had to admonish anyone about that in several months. Maybe people actually read the 'read this before posting' notes?
