DISCLAIMER: I did not witness this personally. I am not on this campus. I did not speak to anyone involved. The following opinion is based only on what I have read here on GreekChat and at the above link. I am addressing this opinion to the situation in general and in particular to the "pattern" that seems to be developing at Duke.

OK, WHY in God's green earth would any ADULT think that the possible sanctions facing their chapter are "not fair" and they would rather disband than face their consequences like MEN??????? In both articles, these chapters were currently on probation for alcohol violations. They KNEW what rules they were not supposed to break, but they did. They got caught. Chances are they knew what was going to happen to them when they did get caught.

So WHY are these guys "giving up", and making it sound like it's their only option to continue their fraternity experience? Sorry to be a party pooper, but there are rules to be followed in this world, and consequences when we break them.

Reality is that we all have those chapters that are there for the party and the fun, and less for the founding ideals, etc.

(On another note. . .considering 4 Kappa Sigs gathered anywhere constitutes an official Kappa Sig function is rather harsh. What if 4 of them lived together and one wanted to drink a beer. . .would he have to ask his other 3 roomies to leave?)

Is Duke a public university? If it is... We haven't had it happen yet, but one of our brothers is in good with some ACLU lawyers. We have a similar rule that says 3 members constitutes an organizational function. The ACLU has made noises that if that policy was enforced they'd sue saying it violates our civil rights to do what 21 year old college guys are supposed to do. Drink beer.

These guys aren't, IMO, "whining" about the sanctions . . . they realize they got caught, but also realize they can't continue to exist if certain sanctions are dealt. For instance, SAE going sub rosa allowed them to continue to exist, as they were able to rush etc. Should they just watch themselves dessicate into nothing?

Thanks for the definition of "cause" and "effect" - but to answer the first question, it sounds like they're trying to preserve what they have, and pass it along to others - which they feel they can't do with the university sanctions. MAYBE it is the only option for them to continue their fraternity experience - I don't have their experience, so I don't know. All I know is, the administration holds the power over the on-campus fraternities . . . if these houses are being choked off by admin, maybe this is, in fact, their only option.

Actually, that's a national rule for our fraternity - there are reasons for it, and I've found it to be pretty much universal between GLOs. Check out the by-laws for Alpha Sigma Tau, I'd bet you have a similar rule - generally between 3 and 5 members together constitutes a "fraternity event" for the purposes of liability, rules, etc. The rationale makes sense, from a national standpoint.

It's not the end of the world if a chapter breaks from a national. In many cases if the chapter stays with the national they may, in time, dissolve into nothing. But, if the chatper decides to leave the national and stay together as a local, they are trying to keep their presence instead of dying out, like KSig RC somewhat stated.

It's not the end of the world if a chapter goes local, it happens a lot more than I think some people realize. We did it, now we are TRYING to become a chapter of a certain national org.
