New Girl in the House!
Hi I'm a freshman this year at Appalachian State and want to join a sorority SO bad!! My friend joined one at her school last year (not ASU) and LOVES it! Her sorority is not at Appalachian (Delta Delta Delta) but I'm still so thrilled to join one. I have been reading some of the rush advice that helped her get through her rush experience and must say I am nervous... but I've done my research and of all of the seven groups on campus they all seem really nice.
Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Delta Zeta, Kappa Delta, Phi Mu & Sigma Kappa. I have researched some of their websites and can't wait to see which one I end up joining.
Also a new one is to be added later in the Fall- Alpha Omicron Pi!!!
I'm so excited.... Does anyone have any advice on rush at App? It doesn't seem too competitive or anything but it is in the South!
Also I want to start a recruitment thread just like others have done on here.
WISH ME LUCK!

I wish you all the luck in the world!
In the meantime, though, PLEASE read the first post here. The secret of Recruitment is DISCRETION! There are more than a couple App State people here, and it's best to play your cards close to the vest.
Oh, and the other advice about recs, etc go well at ASU, too!

I'd think it would be fun to go through recruitment for the experience, but hold out and see about being a charter member of AOPi

Did I misread your post or are you telling the OP to not go through recruitment and only look at potentially chartering AOPi?

Congrats on looking to go through recruitment.
Like said earlier...see if you can gather any recs before recruitment begins. App is certainly not a crazy competitive school like many of the SEC schools but its best to get your ducks in a row.
I'd love to hear you post your story as you go through as I know lots of people at App and my boyfriends mom is an advisor for one of the sororities there!
Good Luck!

I was wondering the same thing.
Nothing is guaranteed... ever. Maybe she'll get a bid to one of the existing groups... maybe she won't... maybe AOPi willl invite her to join the chartering group... maybe they won't. So she could potentially miss out on being part of one of the current groups if AOPi, for whatever reason, does not choose her to be a chartering member. I'm almost certain there will be some kind of presentation or something from AOPi during the normal FR process so that pnm's can make that decision for themselves... as opposed to some random person on the internet making that decision for them.

I didn't say don't go through recruitment.
I said it would be fun to go through for the experience, but also fun to go through the AOPi charter experience.

Hi Winni - sorry we misread your original post, however I think if you had worded it the way you did the second time around it would have not caused confusion.
Originally you said "I'd think it would be fun to go through recruitment, BUT hold out (which generally means "keep back from action") and see about being a charter member of AOPi"

I'd love to hear your story if you ever get a chance. Something like a third of the people that went to college from my high school went to App.
I have two friends that went Greek there, one Sigma Kappa and one AKA, but I don't know much about their Greek system.

It would be a lot easier if we could read word inflection on the interwebz!

Appalachian
I am an Appalachian Alumnae. I was Greek at previous school, then transferred. Recruitment is not as competitive as the larger NC schools, like UNC or Duke, but remember that no recruitment process at any school is a cakewalk. Recs are not absolutely required, but they would certainly help you if you have them. This is only the second time that recruitment has been held in the fall for incoming freshman ladies, and they also eliminated deferred rush for the guys too this year. That has really increased the Greek Life buzz, not to mention the two new Chapters that will be recruiting this fall too (AOPi and SAE). I am sure that the number of women going through has increased quite a bit since I graduated.
Good luck during recruitment and enjoy you time at Appalachian! Let's go Mountaineers!!!

I just transferred from App to UGA and I can tell you--there is a HUGE difference! Apps sororities are not typical of southern sororities, and they are a lot more laid back. I know girls in most of the sororities and I love them all. Do be prepared, however, as greek life at asu is growing at an ENORMOUS rate!!!!!!
good luck though, all the sororities there are so awesome. They don't have houses though, they all live in a hotel that ASU bought and turned into a dormatory..which is actually kind of cool.

I'd love to hear how that goes! From my understanding once they moved away from deferred recruitment the numbers for sororities skyrocketed. I talked to several members from different sororities. I would love to hear how it changes the fraternity scene at App.
