Have to Vent - show me some sympathy please!!

OKAY, so two weeks ago, my youngest got his license and within a week had gotten in a wreck - totally an accident, he hit a slick spot and spun out, clipping a car in the spin. Luckily, there was no damage to our vehicle (because we only carry liability on the "kid car"), but we had to file a claim on the other vehicle because the damage was pretty pricey

Fast forward to Tuesday of this week, my middle son gets home late in Austin, and his garage is blocked so he parks on the street, his IPOD is in plain site on the front seat. What happens? Somebody busts out the passenger window and steals the IPOD. We don't claim it, I get a glass co. to fix it, and make my son pay the $220.00 - expensive lesson - don't leave valuables in plain sight.

Now, this morning I get a call from same son. Last night, he went to the AXO house to watch the skit practice (some of his good friends are performing), he parked the car in a close by parking lot. When he goes out to his car, somebody has plowed into the front quarter panel - of course - NO NOTE!!! I hate it when people do that How unbelievably inconsiderate. This time, a claim had to be filed (thank GOD we didn't claim the window).

Please God, let the bad car karma end!!!

What a run of bad luck! My brand new prius got hit in a parking lot on my first day in Baltimore last summer. I was so MAD! Then, I started running into my neighbor's fence pole and my other neighbor's brick wall trying to squeeze out of my tiny parking space off an alley. Every bumper on my car is scratched up, but at least I didn't cause the original damage! Unfortunately, I was then hit by another car on 295 during a snow storm. Luckily their insurance paid without any problem. Hopefully your son's have learned their lessons about the IPOD and dangerous driving conditions. Street parking will always be dangerous. Hope things get better!

I feel for you, Srmom! 2 boys in college,3 under-25 males driving... I can't imagine what your premiums must be. Ours are bad enough with 1 under-25 female Good Grade Discount who doesn't even have a car at college. Heaven help us when the 2nd kid is old enough to drive. Maybe we'll make him wait until he's 25.

It's been pretty bad for the past 5 years! Honestly, it's the biggest bill I pay each month besides the mortgage!!!

I was feeling so good too, insurances wise, because we turned the title of the oldest's car over to him. He registered it in Florida and got his own policy. By taking him and his car off of ours, we took a huge chunk off our premium. We were coming out ahead by a bunch, even after adding the 16 year old. But, now, when it renews in October, I'm expecting a huge hit.

There goes the "accident free" discount!!

Interesting fact, the insurance for my oldest son's car, a 2002 Lexus IS300, went from around $2400 a year in Harris County, Texas (Houston), to around $1100.00 a year in Gainesville, Florida. I guess because of the number of cars in Houston, and the car theft/collision statistics, the rates are MUCH higher.

That "kid car" isn't worth collision/comprehensive. We bought it used 5 years ago, it's been through my other two boys, and is a bit worse for the wear. After the little fender bender a couple of weeks ago, we told the youngest that he better be more careful because if he wrecks it, he'll be biking til he graduates

Thanks for the well wishes! I needed them

Bummer...sorry to hear that. I'm actually trying to imagine how the older son must have felt before making that second call. First he had to call to say somebody busted his window; then, just a few days later, he had to call you about the panel damage.

I hope this is the last of the car worries for a long while!

Yeah, there were a bunch of, "Yes, Maam's", "I'm so sorry's" and not a single "Poor me." I was much more angry about the car getting broken into because he left the IPOD in plain view, which he has been warned about. That's why I made him pay for the repair, and he now has no IPOD. Getting backed into wasn't his fault, and we'll pay the deductable for that one.

Another thing, one of the girls he went to see perform last night was in a horrific wreck last spring where a boy died, and she was badly injured. She had to take the spring semester off while she endured surgeries to repair the broken bones and injuries sustained in the wreck. My son told me that as mad as he was when he saw his car, being with her made him put it all in perspective - a car can be repaired.

Thanks again

I don't know if it's because we're a No Fault Insurance state, but here, if a parked car is hit, there is no deductible and they cannot raise your rates because you had no control of the situation...

I posted our bad car luck back in the rush thread where you first mentioned this, but my brother's car was stolen while sitting in front of our house while he was away at college and my dad and I didn't even notice because my mom was in the hospital at the time and we were really distracted! We picked up my bro at school and brought him home for a weekend and he says "Where's my car?" Uhhhh, errrrrrr... We had no clue it was even gone or for how long!

srmom, I feel you on the car drama. My car was stolen about a month ago. It was found in one piece 3 days later, but there was major damage inside and some damage to the left rear bumper. The took the stereo and iTrip (lucky for me I knew better to leave my iPod in my car) and emptied my trunk. The most valuable thing I had in my car was a HS photo album...but I think I have the negatives here somewhere.

State Farm has been wonderful. We had full coverage less our deductible, but my fabulous cousin (whose shop fixed my car) took care of my deductible. I've had bad experiences with other insurance companies, and thankfully that wasn't the case here.

I finally got my car back a week ago, but had to take it back in twice because the wiper knobs weren't working properly and I discovered the assholes took my spare tire.

I had a hard time driving her the first few days, but I realized that I couldn't let it get to me.

Here's to better car karma for us all.

OTW -- I had a car stolen several years ago and got it back much like you did. The window was broken and my CD player gone.

In my case, I found a little humor in it all -- the kids (I'm assuming) who stole the car took the cheap crap CD player, but left the $200 briefcase which was in the back seat.

Right. The "stereo" (if you could even call it that) was an 11 year old after market Alpine that didn't even play burned CDs. The LCD display stopped working 6 years ago and the numbers and text was already worn off the buttons.

YES!!!
Well, I was 15 at the time, and I'm <gulp>... 43 now I actually called my friend's mom, who drove me to school everyday, to see if she remembered whether the car had been there that morning when she picked me up. She couldn't remember either. We truly all felt awful but it probably had only been gone one night...
