Wayne State Students

Hey everyone!

I'm new to this site... And well, to the college scene as a whole. I will be a freshman at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan come fall and I was wondering if anybody on this site attends the school. I'd love to talk to somebody about the campus' Greek life.

Thanks.

One of my brothers actually goes to Wayne but is a member of our chapter here at LTU.

Anyway, I don't know too much about about the Greeks there, although I did participate in part of their Rush last Spring. From what I saw, it seems like they have a pretty active and fun Greek Life.

This probably sounds stupid, but I didn't know you could join sororities and fraternities at institutions other than your own! You learn something new everyday?

I think he means that the guy joined at LTU but transferred and is going to Wayne now. You can't join a group at a different school than the one you're going to.

Hey! What sorority/fraternity were you a part of? Basically, I just wanted to get a brief low-down on some of the sororities. I don't drink or party excessively, for example, so I'm wondering if this comes down to being more of a myth than anything and if it will be easy to reject these things without being looked at differently. Also, I'm wondering if most of the sororities require the girls to live in a house and general prices. Anything would help... Thanks!

Pertaining to the bolded part, you will probably find this thread helpful. (Although it has a little bit of drama, sift through the BS and you will find some helpful information on drinking when it comes to Greek life and college in general).

ETA: The OP in the thread I referred you to is claiming that Greeks go through a lot of seminars about drinking and drugs, yet still partake in it. However, if you read a little while down, you will find that a lot of women in sororities state how some of their sisters do not drink, and it does not affect their experience with the sorority what-so-ever. Bottom line: There are drinkers in every situation. But, there are also non-drinkers. These women on this thread have stated that your sisters will accept you no matter your stance on drinking (unless you're a raging alcoholic ).

If there are houses, you will probably be expected to live-in at some point. The time period probably varies from chapter to chapter. Costs also vary as well.

Thank you for responding. That's more or less what I was curious about... Whether I'd fit in well. You're right though, there's bound to be people for and against it in the house so it shouldn't be hard to make friends.

I know that costs vary, but as a generality, a sorority house usually costs just under the price of dorms, right? That's what I seemed to have picked up on at least.

It depends on your school. Where you go to school, living in a sorority may be less expensive than the dorms. Here, I think it depends on the dorm. Example: Sorority living is cheaper than the more expensive dorms here, but it's pretty equal to some of the cheaper dorms (and sometimes costs more).

exactly, and you also have to consider other things when looking at cost- such as food. The sorority house you may be 21 meals of good food a week, versus only paying for 10 in a dining hall. My house also had parlor fees for the women who didn't live in the house- but it was waived for those who lived in.
So living in a dorm + parlor fees + food costs was more expensive than living in the house, even though it didn't look like it at first glance.

The sororities don't have houses due to local panhel bylaws, so that being said dues shouldn't be too much a semester maybe $300 a semester. They were talking about giving each sorority a floor in the dorms but not sure if that ever went through or not. When I was active there where 4 groups with a cap of 50 girls. Typically two ( AGD, DZ) of them would be at 55 girls while the other two ( KD, AEPhi) would be at maybe half quota. All rush events are dry anyway so partying won't be an issue. AEPhi's a jewish sorority but none of the girls in it are jewish, so keep that in mind as well.
