Dress by Example

Okay,

I know this might sound odd, but after pledging Kappa Sig, I found myself wearing a suit almost daily. I was either speaking somewhere, or going to meetings (I was active in campus orgs other than Kappa Sigma) or going to ritual meetings. Some other brothers would dress beyond the standard as well and we found a heavy polarization in meetings. Brother E. might wear a suit and tie, while Brother D. would wear surf shorts, a tank top and shades. Same with formals. Some guys would get really dressed up, and some would just wear a tie with khakis or golf attire.

I've always been of the mindset that dress for meetings should be "suitable and respectful", rather than quantified in a dress code. I felt that as the chapter evolved and as the Greek system took hold, over time the informal code would result in a higher standard of dress.

Does anybody else get a charge out of dressing up for meetings and events? I own a tuxedo, an ivory tailcoat and a stroller, as well as numerous suits, including seersucker and many colours. I just get a thrill from getting all duded up, going to a meeting with others who actually care about their image and want to present an image of formality to go along with the ritual. We talk about some pretty deep concepts in ritual, so it's like going to church or a wedding. At least that's how I view it.

Anybody share my love of dressing up? I just enjoy the chance, compared to the grind that is daily life.

Thomas
