Activities
Some things my chapter has done in the past:
-Beach volleyball (or indoor volleyball if the weather is bad)
-Old school Board game night (was popular)
-Simple info session with hot chocolate and cookies. 'Come in from the cold and have a chat!'
-"Invite only event" to a sectional fellowship, with handwritten personal invitations
-Pool party type fellowship. Bring music and come to the rec center pool.
-Dinner at Chili's (where the proceeds went to St. Jude, decorating a pepper), then we would take turns moving around the table to talk to the pledges.
-Bowling night
Definitely include some fun service projects so they see what APO is really about. Some we've done during rush:
-Pillow making
-Breast cancer ribbon making (same time as board games)
-Sign language
-Cards and snack kit making for soldiers
There are more service projects and events, but my brain is hazy. The most important thing is to advertise and to talk to people. Walk up to them. They're more inclined to come if they speak with you, rather than if you just show a flyer. You could also put your programs in your school newspaper. Our paper has a deal that if you deliver the papers around the school, they'll give you the ad for free! Plus its a good way to do service to your campus, by making sure students have access to their paper. If you have a campus tv station, get an announcement on there too! Don't forget the college radio station. Having a table can also help. We're having a table on a busy part of campus, in addition to doing club fair and the all greek barbeque (like club fair, but for greeks and with food). Sometimes giveaways help, if they're done right.
We havent tried this yet, but I think its something that we might do this semester:
Have blue and yellow lollipops, and print a little fact about APO on a sheet of paper, and tie it to the lollipop. Include contact info on the other side.
We're thinking of doing a back to school kit: Folder, looseleaf, pencil, etc, and put something like, 'Alpha Phi Omega wishes you a great semester', on the materials, and of course include info on us, and our programs and events.
I hope this helps!
