Alcohol Survey
Whats up everyone,
I am part of a speech project on college drinking and I am doing the Greek portion of the speech. I am looking for what some of you think are the major problems associated with Greeks and alcohol. All comments are welcome. Thank You!

Come on people, I know alot of you have some pretty strong opinions about this topic. Anything to do with Greeks and alcohol; stereotypes, hazing problems, misconceptions ect.. even input as to possible solutions that will set the record straight or change our image.
ThankYou!

You are absolutely right: everyone has an opinion about this topic, and usually everyone shares it! Until they do, try performing a search of the forums. Use words like alcohol, hazing, image, perception, etc.
You can follow this link http://www.greekchat.com/forums/cgi-...i?action=intro
or click on "search" in the upper right hand corner.

Hi Beef,
Your name reminds me of a guy from my high school. I hope for your sake you’re not stocky & 5’4”.
Some of the problems?
The perception that Greeks are the only ones who drink, that ALL Greeks drink, that eradicating Greeks will eradicate alcohol use. (all obviously untrue)
That hazing is created completely by alcohol. Alcohol simply points up the problems that a chapter with a hazing culture might have. The hazing needs to be taken on its own and not plopped in with alcohol.
Alcohol use and abuse is a convenient tool being used by politically correct administrators & faculty, when their real problem with Greeks is that they perceive them as elitist. (see Dartmouth)
DKE has a lot of good Greek related articles on their website (www.dke.org). Go into the “Click here for news” section, and look out for the George W. paraphernalia!
Good luck,
“33”

Beef:
Personally, I think Greek use of alcohol, while still a problem isn't nearly as bad as it was when I was a student (10+years ago)and people seem to be more aware of the dangers and consequences now. Of course, this is only comparing the campuses I have been on. There is one issue I really haven't seen addressed, and that is the reality that many of our members have been using and abusing alcohol long before they ever joined a GLO or even began college. It is hard to get people who have been drinking for four years (or more) already to change their behavior and stop the underage drinking etc.

Cool, thanks for the replies! I think we get focused on more because we are more public. There are ALOT of places having kegs or parties but when a Greek house has one its big news and we are corrupting the campus! SHAA RIGHT!!
33girl, thanks for the link! lots of good stuff there! and now I am not short and stocky, Im tall and thin! go figure!
Thanks again!

Alcohol and the greek system tends to be a touchy subject. It seems to me that any time someone greek starts talking about alcohol or parties or bars, it reflects the greek system, when in all honesty, it reflects the individual. There are reallly two types of greeks out there, there are those who want to be socially acceptable-they join for the image of being greek. We don't like to admit that, but unfourtunatly it is true. I know several people who did this while I was in college. These people are the ones that are the "hard-core" partiers and drinkers. They try to make every greek event a drinking event. Now, i'm not saying that everyone that drinks are these people-don't take me out of context. The second kind of greek is the one that joined their orginization to make a difference. They want to be involoved. Yes, they like the parties and so forth, but the whole reason they joined was because they wanted to do something important and they found that greek orgs. supply that. So I don't really think that being greek really afects how or why they drink. I think that the individual is the one responsible for how and why they drink.
The unfortunate thing is that we as greeks are labled as "party animals". We put on the best parties and we know how to have fun, but that is because we have pride, we know each other, and we are comfortable around each other. We've created bonds with our sisters/bros. that are unbreakable. That is why we have so much fun together and why we put on great parties.
I believe that the biggest problem/myth is that people believe that to be greek you must be a drunk. Somewhere along the way, someone got the whole greek image off the track. It's too bad because people fail to see the good in greek orginizations because they don't want to see past the bad.
That's just my two cents.
