Copyright laws?
I'm having some trouble finding out information about copyrighted music. The song in question is from 1965 but I don't want to use it entirely, just literally 6 seconds of it. Does anyone know anything about copyright law that could help out? Thanks! (I'm hoping the lawyers on GC might know) :-)

I am not a lawyer.
You should write a letter of intent to whoever publishes the song (the information should be in the liner notes) asking for permission. Make sure you tell them what you are doing and why.
If you're using the 6 seconds of the song publicly, then they might want money. If it is for a ritual or something they might just give you permission.
Either way, to protect yourself, I would write the copyright owners or have a lawyer do it for you.

This cannot be stressed enough. Some law schools and bar associations have IP and copyright clinics, where people can seek information for low or no fee. I would suggest you contact your local bar association, and they may be able to direct you to someone.
No lawyer with a shred of ethical duty will answer this for you, for a number of reasons.

I'm sorry, I had no idea. I've been looking it up as part of a project. I've called UMG music and talked to their copyright office but so far, no one has given me any useful advice. But, thank you for the replies! I'll continue my search

Copyright Laws
I actually wrote my autopsy in my Supreme Court class on a similiar topic. I would suggest reviewing the Tasini vs. New York Times Co. case for a little background and familiarity. Finally, I would suggest getting some good advice from counsel that is experienced in this type of law.

Write them a nice letter-with proof of delivery et al.
Again goes to trying to do the right thing at a professional level.
Something like this I just somehow do not see anyone handling as an e-mail or a phone conversation.

Funny name indeed - that's what the professor called it. It was for a senior level Political Science course designed for Pre-Law students.
Cheers,
