Recruiting Services

Hello Sisters!

I just wanted to let you all know something that was brought to my attention as Membership and Reference Chair for my Alumnae chapter. I received a letter from Headquarters asking Thetas to not use third party recruiting sites to submit reference and legacy letters. I know this will seem like common knowledge to many of you I would just thought I would let you know.

Below is the letter, though I have taken out the names and email addresses that came with it.

We would like to make you aware of a new type of business that appears to simplify the recruitment process for potential new members (PNMs). These for-profit Internet sites offer to assist PNMs with obtaining references. They charge a fee for college-bound women to have reference letters written for them and sent to their respective chapters in an automated online format. Both Kappa Alpha Theta and the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) are aware of these sites, but do not support their use.

Kappa Alpha Theta does not endorse the use of any third-party business (whether or not they charge a fee) that offers to help PNMs obtain references for several reasons:

· These third-party businesses place the responsibility for obtaining a reference with the PNMs, rather than with the chapter.
· Theta has resources available for alumnae to use for references—including our own on-line system.
· There is no reason for PNMs to pay for references.
· There is no way to verify that the writers of references from these websites are Thetas.

These third-party businesses require PNMs to supply the names and addresses of women from whom they seek references. If a Theta receives a reference request from a third-party site, she should use instead one of the Theta procedures outlined below and notify the PNM—if possible—that the Fraternity does not accept third-party references.

Thetas may submit references directly to college chapters via the Fraternity’s automated online format www.kappaalphatheta.org. Alternatively, Thetas may use the reference form (found in The Kappa Alpha Theta Magazine or on the Fraternity website in the Form Zone section) and send it, via US mail, directly to the college chapter or, if applicable, to the local recruitment reference board chairman (RRBC). If you would like more information on Kappa Alpha Theta’s policy on references, please review pages 4 and 35-41 of the Kappa Alpha Theta Membership Manual, which can be found under the Resources tab of the Theta website, in the Theta Manuals area.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Loyally,
