Kevin Powell
Did anyone know that Kevin Powell is frat?
http://www.kevinpowellforcongress.org/about_facts/
I wouldn't have known if not for a Brother mentioning it on AlphaEast. I asked him then whens and wheres and I'll share when I find out.
For those that don't know, he was an original cast member of The Real World among many, many other things.

*crash*
I remember Kevin!!!! I professed my fondness for RW season 1 in another thread. That's amazing he's running for Congress, I'm actually really proud of him for staying so involved. Makes all those folks still going on the RR/RW Challenges look kind of lame, huh?
And he looks good! Thanks for posting this, Sen, I'll be tracking his campaign, now.
*end crash*

I heard about this a few months ago from a couple of the brothers in Rho Sigma...apparently he came through one of the NYC undergrad chapters, as he is actually still working on his Bachelor's. ZE chapter, I believe--although given his public persona, I'm fairly sure it was 'strictly by the book.'

well back then, the teaching "rules" werent as strict, right? ie. you necessarily didnt have to finish college?
and hey, it WAS the first season, and their jobs often dont make sense or are very realistic. except the season the cast worked for Upward Bound. that was cool.

There are still people teaching at the collegiate level without college degrees. Not that common but it happens.
I guess it depends on the University and the department. He may have had something that they thought trumped a degree at the time.

I thought the first season of RW was when they actually had their own jobs that they got themselves. I thought it was cool that they didn't work together. I didn't know MTV got the jobs for them. That takes the "real world" out of it for me.

well ill clearly be showing my (lack of) age by telling you i wasnt really old enough to remember RW1 (actually, the earliest i remember is Boston, or was it Miami, or Seattle?). but the seasons i've seen, i believe that the producers set the cast up with a job at some company or organization (wasnt Las Vegas the one where the cast ran the club/bar? and Hawaii did something with a radio station, or something communications-based?)
oh, here's what Wiki says:
Quote:
Initially, the show would document the housemates as they struggled to find and maintain jobs and careers, with minimal group activities aside from their day-to-day lives in the house and their socializing in the city. The only group activity engineered by the producers during the first season was a trip for the three females to Jamaica. By the second season, sending the entire cast on a vacation would become the norm, and the second season cast was also sent on a day trip to Joshua Tree, California. By the fifth season, the cast would be given an ongoing, season-long activity, with the Miami cast given startup money and a business advisor to begin their own business. This aspect of the show remained in subsequent seasons, and would be obligatory, with casts assigned to work at after-school daycare program, a radio station, public access television station, etc.
|
so the show started out real, but then I guess "real" didnt pull in numbers, so they created all this other BS to come off as "real."
all this talk about being real, "real," and REAL wears me out. LOL.

Neither have I. And, actually, all of my instructors had PhDs.
I could've sworn that I have heard of a college instructor who had never been to college but was really prolific in some area. This may have been a guest lecturer, though.

Off with your head for not being old enough to have watched RW1!
RW1 (and maybe RW2?) was the season where they did not share jobs. They were the equivalent of video taped housemates in the real world and nothing more. They had their own professional and social lives and kicked it at the house.

LOL
Yes, the post-RW1, MTV-manipulated, RWs drew in numbers. People wanted to see them interact 24/7. Add arguments to the mix (Kevin Powell was the first to blow up at a housemate) and people wanted to see how REAL stuff REALly got once they got tired of each other. I say that after the RW Miami argument about the opened mail, every argument after that was mostly MTV-manipulated.
Oh yeah...back to Kevin Powell being an Alpha, I guess?

^^ LOL, yes, back on topic.
Kevin Powell is indeed an Alpha, and my chapter soror is uber-obsessed with him since RW1. now that hes running for office AND is greek, she's mentally had his children already.

They had their own jobs the 1st 3 seasons (NYC, LA, San Fran) I think the thing that killed that is when they set the 4th season in London and the Americans, other than the girl who did a student exchange program, basically sat around the house and did absolutely nothing. Not to mention, I don't think that the places that the other people worked were agreeable to filiming taking place there. After that, their job was always planned by the show.
I can understand that it would be hard to get a job on your own (especially if you're only going to be there a few months) but it was more "real" when they didn't all work together.

yeah Miami was the first time they were given jobs...I remember that's when they changed the intro from
"this is the true story of seven strangers picked to live in a house and have their lives taped...."
they started adding "open a business" "take care of kids" in Miami..
oh yeah they failed LOL
but Kevin is my FAAAAAVORITE RW Cast member!!!!! No one else comes close! Nicole maybe? *whistles*
