The Rise of Black Greek Letter Traditions
I thought this would be an interesting thread to chat about.
I pledged Kappa at Central State University which is across the street from Wilberforce University, a black college with a lot of black greek history. Central State University didn't come about until 1887 and is located on the old Wilberforce campus. The Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi which was founded in 1915 at Wilberforce branched out to form Delta Zeta (my chapter) which was founded in 1952. The Kappa Chapter (1919) has ties to Delta Chapter too. I'll have to ask my brother what it was, because I forgot. Anyway, Wilberforce is now across Route 42E from CSU.
In 1903 Alpha Kappa Nu was founded on the campus of Indiana University with the purpose of strengthening the African American voice at IU and in the city. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's said to be the 1st recorded BGLO in the history of the United States. It never survived and very little is known about it. Kappa Alpha Psi's history is also tied to this very fraternity. Two years later Gamma Phi was founded which is why I brought up Wilberforce, because that's where it was founded. I remember reading a thread where Sen 1 was talking about a BGLO that was founded before A Phi A. Sen, was it Gamma Phi? I know Gamma Phi actually had a few chapters started before it died out, but AKN never survived beyond IU.
Is there any BGLO history anyone wants to share?
