Rechartering at a "special" school
Hello Brothers...
I've been watching the threads on chartering and rechartering at schools and I wonder what it would take to get a chapter rechartered at Gallaudet? I am an alumnae of the school and its social greek system, but I honestly don't think the current student body knows there used to be a chapter there. (I only know because I was A Phi O before I was social) From what I can tell, the chapter closed in the 80s, but I'm not sure about the exact time.
Is this a school we should try to recharter at? There is already a service hour requirement for graduation (20 hrs/yr; total of 80 hrs) so the kids are already doing service. To be able to do it with the added fellowship and fraternity of A Phi O seems like a good idea to me, but I may be the only one.
Any comments from those who've been around longer than I have? Randy? Jamie?

As a native Washingtonian and as a Brother who pledged in DC, I would personally love to see Omega Omega Chapter come back. If that happened, then all the chapters in DC would be chartered or rechartered and we'd only have UDC, Trinity, and Southeastern University left to charter.
And I do believe that Gally has the right kind of students to sustain a chapter -- highly service and leadership oriented.
They also have close proximity to Zeta Phi and Zeta Mu chapters.
But my biggest concern is communication. I wouldn't feel great at extending there unless we had at least two brothers who were fluent in American Sign Language.
That's just my opinion though.

Based on prior conversations with the administration, and the Region Director, as well as two other potential extension efforts in the Section, Galludet isn't a target at this time. Perhaps in the future, Galludet will become a target.

Ok......Just wanted to know. I'm fluent, so I thought I could be of help, and a young lady who is also fluent will be coming to Mason and I'm going to "encourage" her to join Alpha Delta Delta so she will soon be available to help out at Gally, should it become a "target" in the future.
Thanks for the input.

UDC
Hmm. UDC as best as I can tell has most or all of the NPHC and appears to be picking up a couple of NALFO (Hispanic) Greek Letter Organizations.
Yes, it's a four year school with GLOs, but I think most of my other concerns that I expressed in the other thread about Alpha Phi Omega at schools with no dormitories apply. Still, interesting...
Still wondering exactly what the Gallaudet administration said...

It's only fun if you have partial information.
Oh, well. Hope you announce the PG Ceremony when you get there.

*waves* Hey Jaime! I have a question. When you say that it's not a target, what exactly do you mean? Does the school think that the students would not be interested?
IMHO I think it would be a great idea to have an extention effort at Galludet.

I second that, since there has already been a chapter there (it closed in the 80s or 90s, I'm not sure which).
But I do understand that communication might be seen as an issue, as well as the fact that there has been some trouble and unrest on campus (the protest last year of Jane Fernandes being named President, akin to the Deaf President Now protest of 88; the school losing it's accredidation, though they are off probation now.)
But I can tell you, from my experience there as a student and a member of a social GLO (Delta Zeta, a national PanHell sorority), there are ways to make it work. I am more than willing to be of any assistance if and when the fraternity deems it's appropriate. If you have any questions about greek life at Gally, feel free to ask.
