Once again an African American male has been sworn in as Mayor of Atlantic City and once again that man is a distinguished member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. On Wednesday October 10, 2007 Bro. William “Speedy” Marsh (Upsilon Alpha ’85) took the oath of office as mayor of Atlantic City. Bro. Marsh will serve as acting mayor until a new mayor can be seated by operation of process in the wake of the resignation of Mayor Robert W. Levy.
Bro. Marsh is the former president of the Atlantic City Chapter of the NAACP and has been a City Council member since 2002 serving as council president for the past year. Bro. Marsh will continue to serve as Council President while serving as acting Mayor. It is possible that he could be recommended by the City Democratic Committee to fill the remaining term of deposed Mayor Levy until the November 2008 scheduled election.
Marsh follows Bro. James Usry (Beta) and Bro. Lorenzo Langford (Upsilon Alpha ’85) as the only other African American Mayors of the City of Atlantic City.
