OMG!!!

We had so many Black Hawk Parents during SEC recruitment. And, guess what, the sun came up the next day and their kids didn't become failures when they were cut from their favorite house!

Toxic Parent: Logs onto teenager's MySpace page to research friends, activities, and social life.
That sounds like a good idea with all the skanky young girls and gross old guys on MySpace.

Browsing Myspace isn't toxic, it's one of the best things a parent can do to make sure their kids are not getting duped by strangers. We have had many discussions in our family about how much information is too much to put on an internet profile, and still my younger ones have been duped. It's hard for them to tell when a person is truly a friend of a friend, or someone who happened to 'friend' a friend on Myspace and is just gathering information to sound as if they are real life friends. Not more than 7 miles from our house a 16 year old fell for it and ended up with a 42 yr old guy trying to get into his house! As for my high school son, we have had an occasion to talk about how any girl who feels the need to post a profile picture of herself (15 yrs old) in her panties and a tight, short, t-shirt has deep issues and it is best to stay far away from her.

I just got my To Dragma in the mail yesterday (AOII's magazine). I was tickled to find a story about "Helicopter parents" in the issue. It even referenced the problems with parents calling chapters wanting to find out why their daughters didn't get bids at recruitment! I figure someone at To Dragma must be reading Greekchat!

I had to laugh when I read the article the other day - especially after having read a number of the recruitment threads this fall! The article should be online in the next few weeks hopefully so we can post the link to it.

I think some parents come without rotors.

If being proud of your kids and their accomplishments -- even the challenge children -- I guess a lot of us would plead guilty.

I saw that article a few days ago.

It's really sick what some adults will do...and I feel so bad for the family. The parents were keeping an eye of what she did, that's the sad thing

The story about the girl who killed herself is so sad. I think this highlights exactly why "helicopter parents" should be feared. Being proud of your children and their accomplishments is one thing, but involving yourself to the degree that this woman did is ridiculous! Apparently, the girl killed herself after essentially being dumped online by a boy on myspace. The boy was really a fake account set up by a neighbor who wanted to monitor what the girl was saying online about her daughter. By being too obsessed with her own child, she played a part in destrouing the life of another. I have to hope that she understands what she did wrong.
