Jena Six Statement from the International Grand Basileus
FROM THE OFFICE OF THE INTERNATIONAL GRAND BASILEUS
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, a historic African-American public service organization headquartered in Cary, NC, has carefully reviewed the recent developments of the Louisiana Court of Appeals to overturn the conviction of Mr. Mychal Bell, one of the "Jena 6". Dr. Mynora J. Bryant, International Grand Basileus and Chief Executive Officer, stated on behalf of the over 90,000 diverse membership, that these current events were representative of "the need for continued diligence towards due process in all of our respective communities. " Dr. Bryant noted that while the recent ruling was a positive step, it was by no means the summation to what may prove to be a daunting legislative journey.
Dr. Bryant, is urging the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice to review all of the events surrounding the prosecution of the six black students to determine whether their current civil rights, as well as other Jena residents' rights have been violated.
The National Day of Action is Sept. 20th, 2007, this day is to be a day of unity and support demanding fair and just action. This Thursday, as thousands descend on Jena, many of our members will be present to press for justice; you too can take action in your own community to support the Jena 6. You can attend a vigil or rally near you, start one of your own, pass out flyers to spread the word, or make a few phone calls to increase pressure on public officials. THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2007 IS THE MARCH & RALLY FOR PEACE & JUSTICE. I am asking that each member REMEMBER TO WEAR BLACK, IN A SPIRIT OF UNITY AND TO SUPPORT THE CAUSE.
