Sponsors

My niece is going through recruitment this fall and is in the process of getting recommendations. I happen to know some women that are active alumnae in one of the sororities represented at my nieces' soon to be campus. One has served as a chapter advisor for a different chapter for many years. In any case, I asked them about recommendations and both replied with something like "Yes, she will need a sponsor." I have also seen in some other threads, the phrase *designated sponsor* and sponsor used with respect to recommendations.

Is a sponsor (designated or otherwise) the same thing as the alumna who writes a recommendation? Or is a sponsor something different?

Thanks.
