Mister Pink & Green?
I came across the website of Xi Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. today and thought it was quite interesting.
They have begun conducting a pageant entitled Mr. Pink & Green. Sorors, why is this not a more national event? In a society that considers nothing wrong with prancing women onstage as trophies to be won (as well as one in which the ideal Black male is considered a dying species), I thought Xi Kappa Chapter took on the unique opportunity to emphasize the productivity and positive choices of African American males through this annual function. A rather interesting twist on pageantry I might add. Any thoughts?

Pageants suck! And I hate the Miss Black and Gold Pageant with a passion! As a program, it stretches brothers and small chapters to the limit and objectifies women (albeit subtly). I would much rather just give out scholarships without the "talent" and "platforms."
That said.... if there has to be a Miss Black and Gold, I am DEFINITELY pleased to see that it has a counterpart in AKA, even if it's not a national program like ours.
I met the King of the Ivy for Alpha Chapter and he's a very nice young man!

We used to sell a calendar and had a contest at a bar where the gentleman walked the catwalk, it was a HUGE seller! After the gentleman won, they were photographed and placed in a 12 month calender.
I can't remember what we used to call it, but I can distinctly recall a photography of a muscular Rattler pulling himself out of a pool with ringlets of water sliding down his body.... whew!

We started the Mr. AKA pageant in Sp. '92. The first and second runner ups were given the title of Mr. Pink and the other Mr. Green (don't remember which one was given what) At the time, the Alphas, Kappas and Omegas had their pageants. I don't think any of the other sororities had a pageant. I was happy to see that this tradition is still going strong among our undergraduates.

Well, dang. I guess I just didn't know how many of our chapters held such inspiring events to uplift African American males. Apparently, I have not seen much of them taking place here in Mississippi, or more specifically JACKSON, Mississippi, thus my reason for posting this thread. But if they are taking place, then they are not highly publicized. I'll have to do more research. Thanks for all the feedback, sorors.

I think a male pageant sounds fruity. The end.

I reluctantly admit that I agree with you. I hate that feeling because I know it's a double-standard and one sex deserves to be objectified just like the other. It just seems kind of, odd, but I guess it depends on the guy.

As an undergrad, we were barely into having events that formally uplifted the African American man.
But as a Grad Ad. my undergraduate chapter I oversaw had a "Tribute the the Black Man" event every February during Black History Month. It was a "formal dinner" that gave awards to African American men who assisted the chapter. There was inspirational dance, song and poetry. It was the fellas night to relax, unwind and enjoy their dedicated space with the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Then, I upgraded to a perceptual experience...
I am unsure what they do now. But I plan to re-invent in with my current chapter because we sorely need it up here.
