Jr. Greek
I am a member of a Jr Greek/Youth Auxillery associatied with a D9 fraternity, and since I am in college I have scaled back on my participation. I occasionally stop thru for meetings and community service and things but I try to keep it to a respectable minimum considering that I want to become a member of said fraternity. A member of this Jr. Greek org, and good friend of mine, has already made that transition. We have undoubtedly been seen together in person and in photos (especially in nalia, or inside/outside the frat house). He purposely does not tag me on Facebook and any brothers that do tag me, I un-tag myself. I know there is a need for discretion, but I almost feel like I am being disloyal at the same time. Am I correct in my actions?

I can't see why you would still be involved with the youth auxilliary group since you are in college now.

Sorry, I meant to quote all of this and also ask you why do you feel like you are being disloyal? You joined a youth group not a fraternity. Since you are now in college you can interest yourself in other things, even another fraternity!!

Yes, youth auxiliary participation should stop completely once you hit college, as you should now be eligible to join a D9 org. Or will be, once you become a sophomore.

One might think so, but that's actually my HS football/baseball number. Good observation, though. Anyway, thanks for the advice. Oh, Blue Reign, I did consider other orgs, but I still want to be apart of said Frat.

I thought you liked them. Why do you want to be apart from people you like?

What disturbs me is you are disassociating yourself from your friend for the sake of "discretion." I'm pretty sure that before he was greek, the two of you discussed your aspirations, so he's aware of them. And I'm also sure you're not advertising yourself as a future or soon-to-be chi upsilon zeta. I would think that regardless that he has transitioned into the organization you wish to join, you'd be proud to be tagged in photos of him. I mean, it's not like folks don't know y'all are cool and have been for a while. Don't let your friend's being greek change you.
Can we be clear on something? Delta G.E.M.S., Sigma Beta, Kappa League, et. al., ARE NOT "Jr. Greek" organizations. They are enrichment/mentoring programs, grooming you to be better young adults and better people. Being a member of any of these groups does not necessarily mean that you will become a member of the sponsoring organization (although we would LOVE for you to) or any other greek organization. Yes, they've developed, and have been taught, steps, have calls, jackets, names and numbers. Recognize it for what it is, and don't make it something that it's not.

And this is part of the problem of why these young people think they are "junior greeks." The stepping is okay since everyone and their momma is stepping now but some of the other things just shouldn't be IMO.

"apart", funny. I never said I wanted to disassociate myself, I just don't want people making assumptions about me. The reason I say this is because people are nosy, and all it takes is somebody to see one picture and say, "Oh, are you a(n) _____?" Then the ball starts rolling from there. We attended different schools and the undergrad chapter at my school didn't know me personally, so how are they supposed to take hearing things like that about me? How would that effect my candidacy for membership? Now, this upcoming semester, we will be attending the same school and the most of the undergrad chapter does know me personally. In spite of that, I still might run into some of the same problems.

I feel you, but don't think that there is any problem with the term "Jr Greek". It's just that some ppl don't understand the meaning of it and the purpose of their org. The problem is they don't understand that "Jr Greek" does not necessarily mean "Fraternity/Sorority". That's why you see Kappa Leaguers/Rhoers Club/Sigma Betas with canes and Omega Gents with gold boots, it's just some stuff that aint right.

People are going to make assumptions about you regardless and more so if you do become what you seek. The way you let the men in the chapter know what the real deal is you get to know them. They'll also be able to address the concerns you have much better than any of us here can.

Really, the members should have clearly explained what it is and what it is not because it's their program. And they should be correcting those who aren't clear. Explaining Delta G.E.M.S., Kappa League, Rhoers, et. al. as "Jr. Greek" organization not only gives the wrong impression, it's not accurate. And the folks allowing them to have calls, line names and numbers need to be checked too.

Just so you know, our big brothers did explain to us what was appropriate and acceptable. We never crossed the line with any of the things we did.
