Thumbs down I've Been Robbed

Hi everyone. I need some advice. I was at a club last night with some friends, and when this band was done playing we decided to leave. I got in my friend's car and i was looking for my purse(which I had put under the seat) and it was stolen. I was ready to cry. I had so many of my fave things in there including my cell phone. This is where I'm hoping someone will be able to help me out. I owned the phone, but I was on the pre-pay plan where I payed for minutes ahead of time.
I know I can't cancel my account because of that, but I'm hoping someone knows a way I could get a new phone cuz I heard people say that if it is stolen there is a way to get a new one(I don't know how that works though.) Thanks for any idea you might have.

Unhappy

I'm sorry to hear about your robbery.

On most cell phone plans, the only way to get a free new phone is if you have the Protection Plan that you pay for. If you don't have that you may have to buy a new phone.

Is there any way they can trace a cell phone? Try calling it. It's probably at a pawn shop by now. If someone answers it, make something up and see if you can get them to meet you, then have the cops meet them.

ZetaACe is right. You can usually only get a new phone if you have the equipment replacement plans for lost/stolen phones. As far as tracing them, you can only trace the person that stole it if they are actually stupid enough to use the phone. They usually NEVER answer the phone (trust me --- I know from experience, and no, I haven't stolen any! ). But,if the criminal is dumb enough to use the phone, this will generate a usage history that can be used to trace who they called and find a common link.
