Question Positions

This is my shinee semester, and I am interested in running for some staff or committee positions. I was thinking about Open Rush Chair, Music, or maybe Publicity, but I am open to other positions too. I have talked to the girls in my own group, but I was just wondering if anyone on the board had experiences or ideas to share about positions. Thanks!

Cool

This is my eighth semester in the sorority, and I have had many positions...I've been assistant member at large, public relations chairman, junior panhellenic delegate, Panhellenic delegate for two years, Greek Week chairperson, and Division Conference chairperson! I especially liked the positions on Panhellenic Council because I liked working with the other sororities and chapters. I learned a lot about sororities, and was able to share a lot of my ideas with them! I am a people person so I enjoy interacting with other people through my positions. It depends on hte type of person you are. Good luck in picking the position right for you.

Kirsten

Question

What's a shinee semester? Is it the first semester as an initiated member maybe?

If that's the case; my chapter did have a tendacy (sp?) to give new members certain positions as stepping stones to higher positions. Panhellenic Delegate was the probably the most important one we'd give to a n.m. Also sisterhood chair, sports chair, public relations, and assistant pledge mom were pretty favorable.

As a n.m. I would definitely interview the sisters that currently have the positions you want and ask them how much work is really involved. A lot of positions not only have to organize tons of things but file reports too. Make sure what your taking on will fit into your busy schedule.

I was Rush Chair for the first half of this semester (the first one since my initiation). I enjoyed it, since it allowed me to talk about what I had just experienced (the new member process, rush, etc.). I didn't live in house, which became a liability. Basically, I had to step down from it because I didn't live in-house (I'm a counselor and that was my first priority, other than grades) and it made it very hard. Panhel delegate is a cool position...you'll learn a lot how your sorority works with others at school.

When election time comes around we receive a description of what each position entails. Some offices require that the officer be of junior or senior standing and aren't open to new initiates (like New Member Development).

I've only held one official office so far-and that was Social Chair. Let me tell you, it was hard work getting in touch with people! We don't have a house, so naturally we had to find a venue to hold our functions. In addition to that I had to make sure that my Risk Management Forms were taken care of way before the deadline!

But the best part of being social chair was working with different people. I've made a lot of new friends from the other Greeks on campus, and hopefully I helped to strengthen the Greek life on campus.

Right now I'm in limbo. I had thought that I was going to hold an office for next semester, but since some of my sisters didn't quite make the grades we're doing some reorganizing.

I've never been Recruitment Chair and I don't think I'll ever be up to taking up that task. I'll do all I can to help my sorority, but I don't think I'm sane enough to hold that much responsibility.

I served as Pledge Class Music chair and I composed our New Member Song for Fireside, and that was fun. The best part was collecting songs so that us new members could learn it in time. When your chapter doesn't have an official songbook (aside from the one in our manual), it's difficult, but fun, nevertheless.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Hi Anchor8,

I have held the positions of Chaplain, Scholarship Chair, Social Chair, Alumni Chair, Webmaster, Vice President and now...

President! woo-hoo!

My sorority does not allow for members to hold an office for 1 year following initiation, and I've gotta say, I think that's a good thing. My advice is to take some time and experience your sorority as a general member, before you take on the responsibility of an office. This will give you a better feel for how everything really works (which is often very different from how it is supposed to work, bureaucracy wise) and let you study more which office you would like to hold. Personally (please don't take offense!) I am always bothered when people run for office just to hold an office. So I would suggest taking another semester and running later...
