Wink African-American going through Rush

Hey you guys! I need your input! I am an African-American that would feel out of place if I were to rush any of the NHPC sororites. Even though I would be the only black girl out of 965, I think that I would feel at home with the Chi Omegas at my university. They are my first choice out of five. Please give me your opinions on a minority rushing Chi-O and also if you do have any at your university.

Thanks!

You are not in a sorority yet, so why is your username ChiOmegaChick? Not trying to be rude by anymeans, just curious. By the way, im not in a sorority *yet*

Hmm, are you the ChiOmegaBlackGirl that posted in the Rush-Help with Resume topic?

I'm glad that you are so excited about Fall Recruitment, but bucutie brought up a good subject. Because you are not in a sorority yet, maybe it would be best to identify yourself in a better way. "ChiOmegaChick" simply gives people the wrong impression and says "hey I'm already a Chi Omega!" instead of "I'm not a Chi Omega, but this gives me inspiration!". I'm not trying to be rude, but please take that into consideration.

As with any sorority, minorities go through Recruitment with no advantages or disadvantages.

Though XO is your first choice, please don't let that stop you from feeling comfortable with the other four.

If you have any questions about Fall Recruitment, please visit the Rush forum. There are a lot of girls excited because Fall Recruitment's almost here.

OTW beat me this time. It wasn't the "BlackGirl" part of your username I was referring to, it was the Chi Omega part. Oh well, I guess I will have to be more specific from now on.

I'll also be blunt. You can write "I love Chi O" in a notebook 80 kajillion times and wear pajamas in the colors, but don't assume things in public (which this is). It is not proper protocol for ANY group to say or do things that will make others assume you are a member when you are not.

bucutie...I am just trying to give myself inspiration. You don't know how much I am looking forward to Rush week! *smile BTW - How did you get your slides done? I am thinking of using my pics and scanning them for my 30 photographs, and then giving the disk to the photo lab...What do you think?

I'm glad you have an interest in Chi Omega. I don't know what other sororities you are debating between but please keep an open mind to all of them.
As for the question about you being a minority and joining Chi Omega...I don't see anything wrong with it. Some general things Chi Omega looks for are grades, involvement in the community and school, as well as just clicking with the girls in the house. Skin color, religious background...etc. are not taken into consideration.
So with all that said, good luck and just keep being yourself.
Hootie

PS. Where is it that you are looking to join Chi Omega. Just curious.

You will be on your way; the scholarship is many young ladies hurdle - African American has nothing to do with it- I remember one year ('90)- there were two young women we wanted really bad - - and they cut us - so it is not a point. Like our two wonderful moderators have said (thank you both for your input!) - there are so many wonderful organizations- although we honor your interest - don't limit yourself- you have a choice of many great ones- you know in your heart which one will be your home! I don't see it as an issue. However, at my school there are several sororities and fraternities that most of the african-americans belong to. The issue here being one of their individual preference.

Being a minority should not be an issue. It wasn't at my school (I'm Chinese-Canadain, how's that for minority!!) and shouldn't be at yours. If they do make it an issue, well, you don't want to be there anyways.

I'm so glad you like Chi Omega, but just remember, things happen, and it's never a good idea to make up your mind before you've had the chance to really get to know all of the other houses!

Im biracial, half black and half white, and while Im the only person with a "tan" in my chapter, I have never felt out of place in Chi Omega. You just have to be secure with yourself and not let color become a factor because its really not a big deal to anyone else. Race never came into my mind when I rushed. I just knew the Chi-o's were a great bunch of girls and I have never regretted becoming a memeber. Just go to the house you feel most confortable in and you will have a blast!!!
